Fly Fishing vs. Fishing with a Fly Rod - Where do you draw the line?

Where do you draw the line? I know some people are bigger purists than others. I think I fall somewhere in the middle and some of what is mentioned below is over the line and some isn't to me. But, one of the goals of fishing, or fly fishing in the case of this thread, is to catch fish, right?
I have read on another forum that a 1" gulp minnow on a 1/124 oz. jighead on the fly rod will slay the bass. Is that over the line? What about the coffee bean 'fly' for targetting carp? Soaking flies in Gulp juice? Spoon flies? Other synthetics? Chumming up fish with corn/bread then throwing a corn/bread imitation 'fly'?
So, where do you draw the line?

Feathers and fur. You don't need anything but skill and if your gonna soak your fly or use a gulp then do it with a spinning rod. Its all about the challenge of getting that big fish to eat feather/fur with a hook in it.

It's about the same as cheating on a loved one, the second you either question your activities and FEEL GUILTY, you are over the line, right then and there, buddy boy.
And DONT go asking your male friends if its OK, just keep thinking about your dear old mum and dad.
Oh, and I'm with Bass Bug. I go to catch fish !

Goooodnessss - There is no line...and the fisherman who frowns upon another fisherman for his (legal) tactics, his boat, his attire, or for that matter anything else, isn't a real fisherman, or much of a man for that matter. And for the man who feels frowned upon - smile to yourself at the ignorance of the frowner...and fish on baby!!!!!

Fly fishing is the only way I know how to fish... still can't cast baitcasters, though I can unknot one quite well. So does this mean I'm conditionally a purist? ... lest I say, I just bought a new 14' speyrod so I can now cast my Rapalas .

So, where do you draw the line? It doesn’t matter whether it’s a cane pole, casting rod, fly rod, etc –etc – etc, Fishing is fishing is fishing – tackle and technique is a personal choice. Learn more about the fish … where to do they live, what do they eat, seasonal patterns –be versatile and open minded and then hone your skills on favored tackle and technique.

If you want to fly fish for records (like IGFA records), there are specific rules you must follow. I know of one person who tried to claim a fly fishing record for a species of carp he caught in one of the bayous in Houston. It was disallowed because he had used a coffee bean superglued to a hook.
Otherwise, it's your call.

For me it depends on where I am fishing on what I will use, a pond I fish at does not fly fish well for me at this time because I cant roll cast(working on it though) but I can use my rod and reel and catch bass, now once I learn to roll cast I will fish it with the fly.

Recently acceptable rule change allowed records for “spin flies” after challenge by Henry Cowen, well-known writer, fly designer and guide. Makes the purists shudder in their boots… Someone should challenge the coffee bean rule. Material grown from a bush is as natural as material grown off a rooster….

I've fly fished with bait before. Tossing a shrimp with my 5-weight got me a nice flounder not too long ago. I plan on fishing the catfish spaw next year by flinging worms around dam riprap with my fly rod.

I got to admit, once a friend was chunking, I mean really nasty chunking, a plastic worm with an 8 weight and I gave him the stink eye behind his back.
And it was the nastiness of the cast that truly bothered me.
Then when he offered me a shot at the rig, I acted all grateful and polite.
But I was acting, I tell ya... acting.
Oh yeah, the point being, if you cannot throw a loop, then you are not fly fishing.

there are fly fishermen who cannot throw a loop with any fly. Some of the rules are pretty wierd. For example, a fish caught on a jig head fly cannot be considered for a record whereas one which is caught on the same fly tied with a metal bead on a jighook is acceptable. What about fishing a fly with mono with a fly rod and reel; no fly line. Is that fly fishing?-p-

To add fuel to the fire, I'll add my $0.02 worth. What about thrashing the water with a popping bug. Is that 'fly fishing'? I really don't think so. I have fished with a fly under a plastic bubble with a spinning reel. Is that 'fly fishing'? The list (and discussion) continues. JMHO C2

Repost from TKF. I'm no purist and I really don't care what you fish with on your fly rod. I enjoy fishing. However, I do like catching fish with flies that I tied myself. See that black wooly bugger with the bead head??? I tied that all by myself.

I cant imagine why anyone would use a fly rod to cast a Gulp or any other heavy artificial lure. It is the wrong tool for the job. The right tool would be a spinning or casting rod. Would you try to cast a size 16 Elk Hair Caddis with an Ugly Stik and a Curado?
It is OK if you enjoy using a fly rod to cast heavy artificial lures as long as you enjoy it. Just dont get upset when people make fun of you because you are using the wrong equipment.
It is pretty clear what fly rods and fly lines are designed to cast.
A popper may not be a "fly" but it is indeed the propper "lure" to use with a fly rod...as are streamers.

IMHO, There is a thing called flyfishing. It is done with a hand-tied bug imitation of feathers and other assorted materials. It imitates a fly of some sort at some particular stage in it's life cycle. Thus the name. A flyrod can be used for lots of other applications (and just as enjoyable). Casting light streamers, popping bugs, etc. i fall into this category of fisherman most often. It's all fishing. And I'd much rather be doing it than working any day. I love catching bass and bream on wooly buggers with my fly rod. It's not technically flyfishing, but it sure is fun. I think of it as ultra-finesse fishing, and I have a great time doing it. I also love catching fish on those little tiny flies.
