I talked to the folks at Purtis Creek today, they are getting ready to have a Carp Tourmanent. Then they are developing a plan to get the Grass Carp out of the lake and introduce vegetation back into the lake. The Carp in this lake are the biggest I've ever seen. I don't have any idea how big Grass Carp get but these look to be a least 3-4 feet long.

There could be a bunch of us interested.

Grass carp can get BIG! I've heard of 80s in some southern states.

the fish were put there by the department,,,,,,they are Triploids incapable of reproduction, but they have done their job, at least in the eyes of the department, and vegetation is under control...they will eventually die,,,,,,,as I understand it they will be removed in refrigerated trucks to food banks,,,,,,,GRASS CARP is a misnomer, the are White Amur,no in the Carp family at all,,,,,,,,so long as I don;t have to "GUT THEM" and they will be put to good use, I'm OK with it,,,

Yes, they can get to be immense,,,,and fight more on land than in the water,,,,,,matter of fact, most kill themselves on the mat anyhow

I'm going to try to make it.

I know there's been some discussion about this being a "Kill" tournament. Here's my take...

Part of being a Sportsman is Resource Management, and sometimes that includes Harvest. TPWD has been managing this resource, and put these Amur in there to do a job. Their job is done, and now TPWD has asked our help in harvesting the Amur so that they may return the lake to it's desired state. While I don't usually like harvesting some of my targeted species, I understand the need to do so in this case- They were put there to control the weeds, and as I understand it... They have more than done so. So if TPWD has determined that it's time for them to be harvested and eaten (not wasted), then so be it. I've seen them help us, and I'll do what I can to help them.

Chad
PS- Neil, Amur are in the Minnow Family with Common Carp. They are more closely related than I like to admit.

Chad your take is accurate, while in the minnow family they are solely vegetarians, while our carp are are omnivores if memory serves me correctly they were first introduced to the states in Arkansas to control weed populations,,,,,I erred in saying they were not in the same family, had a brain fart frown and thanks for correcting me cheers was thinking Buffs and talking abour Grassers but as long as the harvest will go to a good cause, I'll be there,,,,

There's a lake at an amusement park near Chattanooga, TN that has some 75lb + grassers in it. People feed them popcorn from the boardwalk.

Been curious about that lake for a long time. I wanna see how big the commons are. I remember some inside info telling me there's at least plenty of 20's in there.

If this is going to be an overnighter, the spring would be more comfortable (unless rainy). Also, I would think that the fish would be hungrier and moving more looking for food in the spring due to the fact that there will be limited vegetation growth during the winter. May not be the case during the summer.

Aren't camping sites on the water fairly limited there? Or is that just primitive sites?

There are primitive sites on the water (and they're great) but they are a long walk.

Of the full sites, there are only a few on the water (and right now a couple of them aren't even on the water anymore).

Winter is better for catching Amur as the vegitation dies off and they clue in on bait much faster
