Things have really changed in the past 50 years. We used to fish for crappie with wire spreaders with 2 hooks we called crappie rigs and minnows for bait. Now almost no one uses the wire spreaders and most use artificial baits.
Get an ultra light rod and a spinning or spincasting reel and an assortment of crappie jigs in chartreuse and black, salt and pepper, red and yellow and other colors in 1/16 oz. weight. Tie the jig directly to a 6 pound test line. A Berkley crappie nibble in yellow or chartreuse on the jig will help.
Do not use a bobber this time of year, but in spring a jig under a bobber is very effective.
Fish the jig by holding the rod as still as you can. Avoid jerking it up and down. Try various depths until you get a bite. This time of year they are at about 14 feet depth. The bite will be a light thump. Raise the rod tip to set the hook as soon as you feel anything.
If you want to use minnows tie a #2 gold Aberdeen hook on the end of your line with a #3 split shot a foot above the hook. Hook the minnow through the lips.
This should get you started. I am sure you will get more advice.
