Things have really changed in the past 50 years. We used to fish for crappie with wire spreaders with 2 hooks we called crappie rigs and minnows for bait. Now almost no one uses the wire spreaders and most use artificial baits.

Get an ultra light rod and a spinning or spincasting reel and an assortment of crappie jigs in chartreuse and black, salt and pepper, red and yellow and other colors in 1/16 oz. weight. Tie the jig directly to a 6 pound test line. A Berkley crappie nibble in yellow or chartreuse on the jig will help.

Do not use a bobber this time of year, but in spring a jig under a bobber is very effective.

Fish the jig by holding the rod as still as you can. Avoid jerking it up and down. Try various depths until you get a bite. This time of year they are at about 14 feet depth. The bite will be a light thump. Raise the rod tip to set the hook as soon as you feel anything.

If you want to use minnows tie a #2 gold Aberdeen hook on the end of your line with a #3 split shot a foot above the hook. Hook the minnow through the lips.

This should get you started. I am sure you will get more advice.

I've started to come into my own with the whole jigging thing and it's a lot of fun. Always as a kid we just used minnows. I even bought a vise and some stuff, watched some YouTube and started making my own. It's even more fun when you catch em on one you made yourself!!!

I agree with smithaven but don`t rule out the JIG & Bobber combo this time of year. Sometimes the situation dictates that you cast a jig and susspend it over the Crappie especially in creek fishing because they are not always within arms reach of the bank.Just try and be as versatile as posible.IOW have options.I`ve learned this from reading the post`s of lovefldx(Rudy)and Carey aka (TarponFly)JMHO

my dad uses corks/bobbers over jigs and wears the slabs out all winter long, so it can work, but probably depends on the lake.
