I want to open my old lower unit and take a look at the gears, but I can't find a spanner wrench at any of the local marine dealers. Short of beating it is there another way to get that nut off? ( so to speak). Or does anyone know where I can buy one locally?

sometimes the tool guys like Snap-on or tool places like Harbor freight will have a selection of spanner wrenches.
