our glass cooktop got cracked. this is the drop in countertop type. i have looked all over the interweb and the instructions and i just cannot figure it out.

i can easily access the underside of the unit. it has no apparent screws securing it to the cabinet, it has no caulk between the glass and the countertop. when i push up from the bottom it wont move. seems like it has 4" lag bolts holding it in but i see nothing

any ideas?

what brand and a pic of the bottom would help, if you can get one.

it may be in a "box" that is a drip pan, try to get me a pic and I may be able to tell. need to see the bottom. and brand and model would help, I may know how it goes in.

Sometimes clear silicone is used and it's hard to see...Try running a razor blade up under the cooktop and see if you can get a little something-something.

When I put mine in a couple years ago there was a seal of some type that went around the edge of the glass and stuck to the countertop. LSS might be onto something, might be stuck to that seal. Now that I think about it that was all we did I believe.

First off, kill power to it before you use anything metal to try to remove it. Most of them just sit in there with a foam seal and silicone around the egde. There may be a strap holding it in on the underside. If there is a strap it should be clearly visible from looking under the counter. I agree with taking a blade to the outside edge and see if it will move.

good suggestions guys, thanks. i have run a flat putty knife all the way around the edge of the glass, no caulk or silicone. i have also run the putty knife around the underside between the countertop and the metal box, there is very little clearance and there are no obstructions as in no screws. there are no clamps. i am beginning to believe that it has been jammed in real tight and is wedged

Go in the cabinet and push up on the bottom of the cooktop, and see if it will budge.alot of times there are a couple brackets/ straps that locks them in,try popping it on a corner under the cabinet and see if it moves.

If I remember right on mine, I opened the oven door and found two screws holding the top on..after removing those you lift up the top and remove the wiring and two screws, clamps on the side going to the cabinet..lower the top and pull the unit out..
hope yours is the same type...

thanks for all your help fellers, turns out it was not attached at all and was simply wedged into the opening, some not so gentle persuasion from underneath and she popped loose. new one dropped right in

I didn't say it was difficult, I just don't want to do it. I still can't decide if I want to change it out or not. It's stainless steel and has the drop in burners. I think I want a glass top, but I can't decide.

You don't want a glass top if you like to cook with cast iron.

Glad you got the cooktop out. I replaced a cooktop not too long ago. I went from electric to gas and from down draft exhast to above the range microwave. It was a fun little weekend project.
