Can anyone tell me what this is? I cant find it on TPWD's website. [img:left] [/img] I hope its not an invasive species, because I released it back. Ive caught this in Mason creek here in Katy while bass fishing. As you can see, it was snagged. I got skunked on the bass fishing rig. The catfish rig was slow to fair today (caught about 6 ranging from 11" to 15").

Definitely Tilapia, that's at the spot by the paintball place right? I was there the other day and there was a huge school of Tilapia all swimming at the surface, "tailing" pretty much haha it was way cool to see

Great eating fish. Thay are stocked to provide forage for bass. Caught occasionally. Most I have seen have usually been foul hooked.

It sure wasnt a good day for bass fishing. I didnt even see any bluegills or sunfish around (normally they take a swing of the worms I cast it).

So I guess tilapia has been intentionally introduced for bass feeding?? Yes. Primarily in warm water lakes. They generally will not survive Texas winters unless in a power plant type lake or maybe in deep south Texas.

Ended up with 1 greenie with not many more bites.

Yup, it's a Tilapia, likely a Blue Tilapia more specifically. I believe Blue Tilapia are the species most often stocked for forage and vegetation control in TX. Though we also occasionally see other species.

Please remember it is unlawful to release a Talapia back into Texas waters. All talapia must be removed by law.
