Couldn't find a thread on someone testing the casting distance on both types of reels to see if there are any differences. I was always curious myself but have heard of mixed results. So i decided to do a few tests.

Test 1:
- Spinning rod 7'8 med action paired with Shimano Stratic3000 / 20pnd tuffline braid
- Casting rod 7'8 med fast action paired with Daiwa zillion TypeR / 20pnd jerry brown braid.

- Both setups have a 2ft 20pnd mono leader.
- Both setups tied with 3/4 oz jighead rigged with 7inch plastic fluke

Results:
- For the spinning setup, I was getting an avg of 100 feet give or take a few.

- For the casting setup, I was getting an avg of 130 feet give or take.

Also, during the casting tests... there was 10-13 mile an hour gust wind so factor that in.

I believe if i bumpup the lure weight closer to 1oz, the baitcaster will increase more than the spinning. But that will have to wait until next time.

I have not met anyone yet that could casts as far as I do using a spinning setup yet LOL.
3/4 oz jighead? only 130 Feet are you sure that was not yards?

Brad, it was roughly 130 feet. not yards. It was pretty windy so i did lose some distance. But 130 yards? with 3/4 and a 7inch fluke? thats more than a football field. I'm going to try casting at football field next time to see.

But yes i do agree that spinning can't cast as far.... atleast with 3/4oz.

the rod has a LOT to do with casting distance
plus the fact that you using a $200 reel vs a $400 reel

Yea agreed. Both rods have very similar action and lure weigh rating.

As for the reels, i can put on a Stella 3k and it will be the same. Line goes out the same for spinning whereas the baitcast has alot to do with the spool bearing and brakes.

Yep I don't think that the price of the reel will make or brake when it comes to casting. My last real cost me maybe $40 I should point out that the type of line will make a big difference to as all of you know. When I went to braid I found casting improved for me.

As to the 130 yards I have done it but I think that 50 to 75 yards are a avg at 3/4 oz cast for me.
Now let me ask this I have found that a closed faced real can and will out cast a spinning real now whats with that? lets not forget the action of the pole in this to

130 yards? with the a good heavy wind behind your back... than maybe. otherwise i don't believe it until i see it. Not on a 7'8 rod with 3/4oz. But i could be wrong...

As soon as you have enough weight to pull line off of the reel, the casting reel will outcast the spinning reel because it throws the line off of the spool most of the distance. On ANY other type of reel, the weight must pull every inch of line off of the spool. I've seen distance casting competition put on by Stren where guys used custom 12-13' rods and very large diameter casting reels to cast over 700' using pendulum techniques. It was very impressive.

The Zillion is not a real factor. Ask anyone that does any reel tuning, and they will tell you that a Curado 200B will cast about as far as any low profile baitcaster with a little tuning because of the diameter and width of the spool.

yeah most carp guys fish at an average distance of 100 yards but can cast further than that.

Wilson,

You are using two different types of braid...different brands have different weaves and this can affect friction and therefore distance as well.

Also the guides on the spinning rod are larger and farther apart causing a larger loop in the line when it spins of the spool which IMO this creates more drag and reduces distance... a way to reduce this is to add more and narrower guides. The guides on a baitcaster facilitate distance with braided lines bc they are small, there are more of them, and the line is not "looping" of the reel

Yep agreed. Less friction when the line goes thru the casting guides.

Not talking about long 9-13 ft carp rods. I was generally speaking in terms of 7-8ft rods. i can cast using a carp rod over a football field with spinning as well.

With one one of my 12' heavy carp rods, I can easily punch a 4oz lead over 100 yards.

I once had my hat snatched off my head and cast 30 feet with a saltwater chug bug..one more inch and I would have had an interesting head ornament.
