If you overturned your kayak! Is this something you would want to practice in the warmer month's, like getting back in? In the event you Accidently rolled over while out on the water. Still in the market for a kayak. Have wonderd about this? Do they sell any good Floating Rods? What do ya'll use? Thank's

The idea is obviously not to roll over. Yes U should practice re-entry at least a hand full of times. It happens to the best. Rare, but it does happen. Most of the time when your reaching out over the side of your yak or re-entry BTB. Happens more in shallow water but knowing deep water re-entry is very important for that "OH Sheet" moment:~P You really need to know YOUR yaks limitations & how to get back ON you yak if you "rolled over", Flip over or Turtle. Some of us put floats on our rods or tether them to our yaks. The best way not to loose them is not to :"roll over". I havent lost a rod off the yak YET! wish i could say the same for my son

I echo everybody else. You want to practice every imaginable scenario. We fish in the ocean and I practice deep water re-entry quite a bit.

That happened to me once too. Thankfully I was only in 4 ft of water. More recently I had a tree limb catch my scupper and was able to push it out with my broomhandle stakeout pole. Wouldn't want to have to go swimming in 40 degree weather, but it could happen.

I practice re entry all the time. Search youtube for "cowboy kayak manuver" or something along those lines. That seems to be the easiest to me. It does require a moderate amount of upper body strength relative to your weight.

Thank's Never thought about tying the Rods to the Yak! If that won't keep em' off the Bottom. I ALWAYS tie everything in when I'm not using it. Have flipped many times (in the surf, never in a lake or river) and have yet to lose anything.

I have had to re-enter once in three months of owning a yak. That was because I got a tree, that was just below the surface, stuck in the scupper hole below my seat. Only way to get it off was to jump off and lift it off... I hadn't practiced the re-entry either. Was a little unnerving but got one without any trouble! I had the EXACT same thing happen to me on Lake Fork!! I was able to use my paddle on a nearby stump to lift the yak a little. Water was in the 40's so I was not ready to get wet. Not an experience I want to go through again!!

I highly recommend practice of reentry. Also practice deep water exit. If you are able to stand in your yak and jump off it shoots away. Practice is fun if you go in proper weather and have someone else with you in case of things going wrong.

nearly twenty years now and I've never gotten off my kayak without meaning to. All it takes is a commitment to staying dry, and a cautious soul.
