guys, this is an initial email to see if there is enough interest to do this trip again next summer to go for those tasty bottom dwelling species. this year hopefully we can get a weekend that has Red Snapper season open at the same time as AJ. the Scat Cat was a good platform and pricing and that will be the 1st choice this year unless we are not able to get it for the dates we want. looking at doing the 36 hours again. if we get enough responses i will call T.O.O. and start the process to get this trip going... if you are interested please reply with: 1. # of people/spots 2. if we can only go after Red Snapper OR AJ's what is your preference knowing that we will try to get a date when both seasons are open. 3. do you want to do group meals as we did last year (except lesser amounts as we had way to much food last year) P.S. If Jim goes i am going to make sure he is going to give away any Grouper he catches...

BTW, the reason for RS vs AJ is we can still catch AJ and release during snapper season. But not keeping all the snapper we caught last trip during AJ season was a major downer. Actually, the only real downer of the trip IMO.

what was the price of the last trip?

there's probably an overlap, that's when we need to schedule.
oh, & of couse I'm in.
I don't mind killin 4 big snappers, lots of good ceviche,

Well, it's not likely that there will be an overlap of the two seasons. So I think I would prefer to take home four (4) Red Snaps (along with some Mangos  ) mainly since the AJ season is a lot longer the the snapper season. If the Red Snapper season is the same as last year I would like to see a mid-July date since the weather is usually more predictable then. My 2˘

Oldtrackster, the price was $390 I believe, for 36 hour trip. The date will depend on the seasons, and I agree with Bobby not likely to overlap. If they don't, we have to choose what we want to target to pick the season, and then pick the date within the season.
We can still fish for monster AJ during snapper season, we just cant keep them. And I would rather keep four of the nice snapper we were catching last year that had to be thrown back than two big AJs (which I would release anyway).
Also, I personally, and many other folks also, got a bit discouraged and stopped fishing at many spots, since we were killing so many big snapper. If we can keep the snapper, we will all likely fish a lot more, meaning increase in catch of other groupers, etc.

I can probably do a July trip depending on the exact date. I am for red snapper and mangos as well. I have not had red snapper in a long time.

Depends on the boat but we are going to shoot for the Scat Cat and that leaves out of Port Aranasas
What depth do you normally fish?

I have an opinion on the live well question. Porckchop said that mixing the different species was what killed some of the bait fish in the live well but I have another theory. Some of the fish were deep hooked and were injured while removing the hook from their stomache and gills. That is what I believe killed some of the bait fish in the live well. I spent most of the trip fishing from the back of the boat and there were plenty of piggies that survived. I was even finding them alive late on the second day but several people gave up on fishing them out of the live well. We were also catching lots of large snapper on the piggies and some decided to fish for larger baitfish like barjacks in order to target larger fish like amberjack. On Diez Tuna we caught a good number of piggies for the live well and they survived the entire 56 hours.

chuck there was no ribbon fish ect in the tank on diez or trout only pinfish also sunscreen on folks hands is bad on the bait. i think more care was taken on the bait on diez IMO

I sent an email back to all in the group, but will state on here also... count me in for one if we can go after snapper. As for the live well, many of the piggy perch did seem to survive, as well as a couple of bar jacks that were used the following morning. Not sure what exactly killed the fish that did die, but the water definitely changed color.

Either fish would be OK with me. Some vermilion snapper would be nice too. The meals last time were great, so Im on board with the group meals again. Few things I learned last trip. *learn when to sleep on this trip *bring a towel and soap *lots of lead and hooks are on the bottom of the ocean now *many big red snappers died on the top of the water *drink the lemonade to stay cool and hydrated *king fish like 15 dollar jigs

I don't remember ribbonfish in the live well for the deep drop but I can't imagine a sand trout would kill a piggie? I do remember when the water changed color..it was after we started adding chubs. Nasty fish! I think you guys will have no problems keeping piggies alive for this trip. I would like to go with you all but will be fishing in Alaska in July. Can't really do both in such short order. Then again...never say never...

TxG, just don’t know at this point. Generally Tuesdays and Wednesdays have the least number of people wanting to fish a head boat when snapper season is open. Most head boats are full every day of the week during the summer Again this may be the only possible plan of action when snapper season is open, or it may not be an issue at all.

I do not believe ribbons will survive in the live well. The scat cat has a freezer under the stairs that the Captain let us put ribbons in as we caught them. they last about an hour, then turn to mush.... they need to be put on ice immediately so their flesh stays hard. deckhands told me this a few years ago.

It wouldn't make any difference to me whether it is a weekday or weekend.
But Willie, I don't see the issue. I don't see why they wouldn't do a charter on the weekend during Red Snapper season. DSH does charters on the weekend without regard to what the season is. Their rates are higher on weekends than weekdays. I know DSH has three boats and they have two but I'd almost be willing to bet that they will still do a charter on the weekend.
I would think that a phone call would find out.

I am at best a maybe until I know dates, but weekend or weekday will make no difference. Oldster, our focus is assuming the worst case scenario of an even shorter red snapper season in 2012. We’ve proposed a June set of dates and two sets of July dates. F.W. will respond to our proposal, and we will submit it to TxGrizz for his approval or rejection. Until we get a handle on which time frame of a seven day week might/will work, we can’t propose a specific set of dates to TxGrizz. Hopefully there will be a set proposed date by the end of this week.

I would think that a phone call would find out. TT, phone calls have already been made. As we posted above, F.W. will respond to our proposal, we will submit it to TxGriz, and we will go from there. Again, by Friday we should have a solid answer regarding the Scat Cat.

Thanks TOO, my apologies I did not mean to push for a date now. I was just wanting to give you input on the weekend vs weekday scenario.
I really hope it works out, I have some bluewater catching up to do and I havent had any red snapper in quite some time.

Tunatamer & lite-liner, I'm here. Bobby you are correct, been hunting or guiding 12 of the last 13 days and am at home now resting up. 12 days in a row is Tough on an old man. Yes I am interested in the trip but till I know dates can'nt make plans.

Well, for myself, I would be much easier scheduled time off for a weekday trip than a weekend one. Much as I would prefer to keep AJs, there's alot of sense in going during red snapper season given that we can release deep-water AJs, but the reverse doesn't work so well on snapper ... although I will have a note on that topic later.
Can't really commit to dates until I have our family trip to Alaska scheduled, so I'll keep watching this one.
