Going to College Station for thanksgiving to see my cousin and his family. (They literally live like 1/2 mile away from TAMU campus) And my cousin and I are looking for places to fish. We were thinking of the Brazos River, Bryan Lake, Gibbons Creek Reservoir, or one of the various ponds like George Bush Library, Gabbords, etc. Anybody fished any one of these places and if so I would really appreciate tips and the such!

Also I have never caught a crappie before so I wanted to ask you guys about what I should know about them. Like what's a good rig, what bait/lure do they go for, how to handle em, what is a good size to keep etc.

Thanks for your time - Riot

almost any hot water outlet in a power plant lake should produce fish for you. Crappie love these places! Go with light gear, and try live minnows, also hollow body tube jigs, curly tail grubs, roadrunners, beetle spins, they all should work. Added bonus is tha each of these offerings will catch other species as well, like black bass!

Good luck!

Very nice to know, as there is a dam outlet in the southeast corner of gibbons creek reservoir that produces a warm water outlet! I will be throwing all kinds of rigs throughout the day hoping to catch a variety of fish, I will post on this forum if I catch any crappie.

Thanks for advice Rudy

I went to school at A&M back in the mid 90's. I lived on Gibbons. I use to slam the crappie this time of year. We use to have the best luck swimming minnows instead of jigs. Hook the minnow through the head and swim it like you would a jig. Don't get too aggressive with it though. I haven't been in several years, but there is usually some brush piles sunk on the tree line to the right of the boat ramp. Also, we use to catch several crappie by the bouys at the dam on the left side in about 15' of water off the rock riprap.

I never had any luck catching crappie at the hot water discharge. There normally is a pretty strong current going through that area and crappie do not like moving water. Hope this helps and good luck!!

Thanks a lot for your help AGSWON, would some of the areas you listed be areas I could hit up from the bank? It's nice to know some good spots about an area I appreciate hearing from you!

Probably not for crappie. You'll need to be in boat/kayak of some sort.

Dang, well that is shot down, unless we can find someone my cousin knows that has a boat, or a rental place, we are screwed.
