Which one do use on your boat or are they real not worth the money?

I know a lot of people use them, but I have always wondered if they were just a last resort from a poorly set up boat and motor combination. It seems to me that motor selection and tuning, prop selection and tuning, boat balance, and proper motor height and setback make the biggest difference. JMO, but I think there are so many other things to fine tune before adding one of those.

i agree. too many other things to correct before it becomes necessary to add a hydrofoil.

i do know some boats will benefit from them.

alot of "fast" or "race" boats use them because of the type of prop they are using.

My boat dramatically got better when I gunned it to get on a plane. Other than that, at speed, it perfroms exactly how it did without one.

I believe for the average joe. A hydrafoil is the ticket to low budget problem solving. If you want it done right, get out the check book. Cause preformance and speed ain't cheep.

I know a mechanic who up-charges $50 everytime one comes in the shop 'cuz he says he knows he's gonna skin his shins at least once.

My stepson bought a under powered boat and it helped it come up on plane a lot better, he's still making it work till he gets a better boat

Boy that's the truth. And some are so rusted you spend as much time taking the foil off as what it takes to put an impeller in........

Had 2 Champ 176's. 1 from Reggie was set up with a 120 Johnson and it was set for optimal speed. Another '93 model was set up with a 150 Mariner MagII and was a factory demo boat. Neither one would do it all aas I wanted, with the one prop. Sure I could have gotten another prop and tweaked it for the very purpose I was wanting but didn't want to spend the $. I'm cheap that way. What I wanted was top speed but wanted it on plane immediately to pull me slalom and to pull kids on tubes slowly AND on plane. Without having to change props for that and then having to watch that I didn't over rev, I simply added an Attwood "V" hydrofoil. Made both boats do EXACTLY what I wanted with 1 prop. When running on pad the foil was not in the water at all and didn't affect top end speed and yes, I tried and did, 1 time, a breach stop with it on there. Too damned violent for me and never did it again. Knowing I coul was enough and I don't recommend anyone doing it for fun cause, at least for me, it wasn't fun at all. BTW, I used the same foil on both boats and could pull tubes on plane down to 12mph according to gps.
