I've finally talked my father into joining me for some serious fishing on the Sulphur River this weekend.

We've fished it by motor boat for years, but this time we're going man powered. We've got some options for launch locations and we may fish the west end of Wright Patman during the morning hours and then after some lunch launch directly on the river.

Hopefully I can follow up with some success stories!

Side note: We will be fishing this area for the next two full weekends 12-13 and 19-20 if any one is interesting in venturing out. I really couldn't tell you how the LMB do on that end of the lake because it's not really our focus, however we've caught a TON of sandies, blues, and channels as well!

How was the fishing there? Enough water for easy access?

Sorry, I've been lax on this thread. My father bought a 2011 Lowe and thus the plastic navy got left behind for the week frown

The bite has been full on, and Patman is still 2 feet high, no ramps closed.

I've been working all week but the bite picked up Monday and they limited or came close to limit all week. I'm driving down tonight and hope to fill the live wells on Sat and Sunday.

I should say that they have been crappie fishing. When I was there last weekend the shad were slamming the water all over the river channel last Sunday the gar were chasing them like crazy.

I tossed some top waters around structure and in the middle of the schooling shad but never had any takers...

I was honestly VERY worried I'd end up pulling back a mouth full of teeth.

Dark/Bright combo gigs have been best and moderate success on minnows.

Did you ever try below the dam?

Isn't the Sulfur a red River Tributary? It should hold striper.

I've fished below the damn before, however they are holding water and there's not much flow.

I was back on Patman over the weekend and crappie fishing was great up river!

We fished lay downs and drop offs along the river channel and pulled keepers from 14 to 8 foot of water. They were great on jigs (black/red, black/chart, red/chart) and slow on minnows.

My father fished the entire week and he and a buddy (and various family members) produced 30 quarts of crappie fillets.

I'll post some photos when I'm off work.

There was no current this weekend and there are several put ins along the river to kayak from.
