I bought a fly rod last year and am just getting started. I've been trout fishing on the blue, and at the lower mount fork from friends at my church. All we caught was trout there. I've been thinking about targeting smallmouth. The only place locally I can think of that is close is Texoma. But during the winter I'm guessing they arent going to be shallow. Again please keep in mind I have very limited experience with a fly rod in my hand. But is it possiable to catch smallmouth on a fly in the winter? Thanks, Shaun

It all depends on the water temerature - the bite will slow down and stop on falling temps and improve on rising temps. Just like fishing for any other species - metabolism slows with temp changes. Sometimes just a degree or so makes a lot of difference.

There are some in the Brazos river below Granbury. I caught two in a morning last year but none since.

Don't forget Lake Whitney, PK, and the rivers below, each. I have heard good things about Lake Murray up in OK. And there are plenty of other places to catch smallies, in Texas. Just depends how far you are willing to drive... San Marcos, Llano, Kerrville, Junction, New Braunfels, Blanco, Castel, Comstock...

... how far you are willing to drive, and how deep you can fish. Last I heard Texoma was "hot" for smallmouth. I am guessing that all those rivers named, except San Marcos, are puddles? Caught a Kentucky last year at Blue. The prettiest lake experience would have to be Murray in my opinion.

Texoma is no secret any more. My buddy caught approximately 25 smallies last week plus a bunch of LMB.

Texoma is close to me. I was waiting for them to lift the bg warning out there. As soon as they do I'll be spending lots of time searching for them.

Texoma is no secret any more. My buddy caught approximately 25 smallies last week plus a bunch of LMB. This is the first documented smallmouth bass caught from Lake texoma circa 1982.

Is this a small mouth? Cause if it is, I can X for you a map's spot on the Brazos, as always, sigh, below Whitney... I caught several more that were even more small mouthy, especially sporting snake skinned backs and the war painted face. None over a lb but the water was thigh deep in the deep pool. Knee deep all around.

If the corner of the mouth is past the center of the eye it's a Largemouth.

steve, there is a lot of hybridized bass in that section of the brazos. they are a cross between sammiles, spots, largemouths, and who knows what else. and don't let everyone know about that spot!!

Yup TroutieB your probably right because I remember that that specific fish was going on and on and on about how bad off he was and he didn't know who his daddy was. Then he 'axed me' for money.

Is there any more updated information on the status of Texoma? Have they lifted the BG algae warning yet?

Is there any more updated information on the status of Texoma? Have they lifted the BG algae warning yet? Too windy for the boat today, so we took the dog up to Eisenhower to hike aroud. Algae warnings are still in place. The lake looked about 7 or 8 feet low. The end of one of Eisenhower's ramps was out of the water, but the other ramp was open and I watched someone back way down it without any problems. I need to do some scouting while the lake is down.
