These are two large softshell turtles I caught. One was caught in Fredericksburg Texas, the other in Southlake.

What did you use to catch it? I catch those nearly everytime I fish.....pretty annoying. I think I have a massive bass on the line and it's one of those softshell turtles. Thankfully I've become pretty good at removing the hooks.

Get sick of catching those nasty things. They get much bigger. Good fight, but irritating to say the least.

Used my hands smile

The one in Fredericksburg was caught with my hands in the Pedernales River. The other was caught in Southlake on the road.

Here is a fair sized softshell (25 pound plus) caught while fishing, using corn for bait.

We ate one we caught on a trot line in the Colorado river. Just ok, a little fishy tasting.

If you don't keep them. Take one up the bank a ways and let it go. Watch how fast they can run to get back into the water. They are speed demons of the turtle world.

Made a mess with one of those as a kid and stunk up my Mom's kitchen! If they're good eating I didn't figure out how to make them that way!

These things are mean and ferocious. I 'd rather leave them alone.

Skin the legs and eat them on the big ones. Tried it once, lean meat that is best used for soup. It is also chewy, similar to fried squid. Red meat for the most part.

The neck has some good white meat. We use to fry them in cornmeal.

My Mom made soup out of them when I was a kid. Sure was good. They are a mean son of a gun. Got to be real careful with little ones around them.
