There are a few threads about Galveston floating around, but not wanting to hijack anyone's thread I just started a new one. I will be going down the 6th thru 9th of November. I'm helping my wife and a few other adults chaperone about 30 kids. I would love to catch dinner for all one afternoon. Looking for opinions on the best tasting fish, what setup to catch them on, area to catch them and best method to prepare them. A lot I know. But I would love to do this for these kids. Cook them some homemade goodness and get them out of McDonald's. Plus I figured it would make for a good discussion on here. Thanks in advance.

Can't believe I would be the first and probably with the least experience but here goes:

Flounder - hear Sea Wolf park is a good place

Shrimp - crabs can be caught off the jetties along Seawall blvd with a throw net or hand line and net (crabs)

Gafftop (NOT HARDHEAD) catfish also off the jetties

Speck and sand trout off the jetties and in the surf (use shrimp or jigs)

If you get a few reds they are good too! good luck

I admire your ambition but do you realize how much fish 30 kid's
could eat ? Then how much work to clean and prepare that much fish if you could catch that much ?

Here's a suggestion : Fix them a chicken seafood jumbo . You can make it before you go freeze it & thaw & serve in short order .

Then enjoy some fishing with the time you saved .

It would have to be whiting or something like it as you can't keep enough of others to feed 30, unless they are all fishing. I think that is your best bet. Maybe you can get a few rods together and put them on some sand trout. That would be fund and completing the circle by eating what they catch is a cathartic process.

You do realize that no matter how fast a fish swims it never sweats?
If you eat pasta and anti-pasta, will you still be hungry?

That is actually part of why we are camping. So they can rely on themselves to survive. They are supposed to be cooking their own food as part of this. I got the final number of kids and actually only around 15 are going now. Some of the boys know I fish and are ready to go fishing with me. So I don't think there will be any trouble catching a few fish (hopefully). I guess I'll just go and see what we catch. If its something we can eat then your dang sure those kids will be cleaning it and cooking it. Thanks to everyone for the advice so far.

the fish were biting for me in west bay. caught 25 specks, 4 sand trout, and a 20" flounder. most of the trout were in the 14-17" range. h&h cocahoe minnows in a silver shad color. they were hungry thumb

The best case scenario would be Chilli ... Frozen ... You can catch all the gafftop that anyone could possibly want if you can cast out far enough ... i.e. second sand bar ... with dead or alive shrimp fished on the bottom. At night .... they are ok to eat ... just make sure that you clean on teh red and gray off of them. I can't stand them personally but this is a survival thing and its definately editable.

On a second thought you can go to any bay right now ..and kill the flounder ... use live Minows... pref pin fish.

I'm back from the trip. Only ended up catching a bunch of small bonefish (I think) and catfish. Still had fun though.

After looking at a pic of one... that would be it. Thanks for clarifying. No one was able to tell me what they were.

depends.... if it is coming out of the south you would be able to wade the left side, but the rocks on the right would be very rough. If I were you I would try mosquito island, never fished it myself but heard it is a good place, just watch if you are wading there is a drop off around there.

I'm planning on driving 5 hours to Galveston next week to try some fishing. Unfortunately, the weather forecast shows 30% chance of rain. I'm wondering if I should cancel my hotel reservations because I don't know if the fish will bite if it rains. Any suggestions on this would be helpful. Thank you.
