Anybody knows anything about the scales that will be used? I have a Cabela's Digital Scale, and if I get into this tournament, would that be fine to use or I have to get another one?

If I want my scale to be certified, where should I go and what should I do to get it certify?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Either you or your partners scale has to checked at corn boil before tournament.

Hey VC, you can read all the rules on this link.
Click

As for whether your Cabela's digital will be "certifiable", I am not sure but I would guess no. I have a similar scale (Rapala digital), and while it has always checked out within an ounce or two when compared to buddies' certified expensive dial scales, I'm not sure these scales are even able to be manually calibrated. I don't think my Rapala is at least. So unless it just happens to fall right on at all the different weights that will be checked, then you're probably out of luck.

But I'll let Neil or someone else in charge give you an official answer on that. smile

I contacted Roger at Bastrop Scales here in Texas and got the following reply about certifying scales:

"We test scales according the rules we are licensed to uphold. Basically, in order to pass, a scale must weigh within .2% of applied weight. We pass or fail based on that basis only."

"We test the scale at several points across the capacity of the scale. It must pass the tolerance at every point.
The $25.00 amount is for this type of test only.

"We can give you any type of report that you want, including the actual weight at each check point. This goes beyond our "fisherman's" special price of $25.00 and would be charged at our standard shop rate of $69.00 per man hour with a one hour minimum. In no case can the scale receive a calibration sticker if it does not pass tolerances at every check point."

"You would need to send us the scale. We will check the scale. If it passes, we will place a calibration sticker on the scale. If it fails, we will not put the sticker on. Either way, the charges are $25.00 + tax + freight to return the scale to you.
The problem with most of these fishing scales is that they are not "calibratable", meaning if they are off, they have no procedure to correct them.
Some of them pass and some do not."

There's not many scales, even the Reuben Heatons, that could stay within that tolerance. That's 1/5 of 1 percent AT EVERY WEIGHT TESTED. I'm not quite sure if there's different types of certification available, but there would have to be.

I believe at the ATC they will be able to check your scales, but I don't think they can give them an "official" certification.

scales will be checked at the Corn Boil,,,,,
a bucket will be filled with water to usually the 5 pound level,,,

Then all other scales will be matched to that weight taken by that scale which will be certified,,,,tolerance of 1 ounce will be allowed...
we will determine scale accuracy at that time...

not to worry there should be enough scales to go around for everyone,,

It can fail certification if it isn't within their specified tolerance of +/- .2%, which is pretty stinkin' tight. My Reuben Heaton is new and I'm not sure it would pass that test. I don't feel they have to be that close for weighing fish, but that's the requirements for a "legal" certification.

Maybe next year for me, or the year after. I have young kiddos, so that makes life tough on the Mrs.

Good luck guys and GREAT job Dr Stern on everything you've done for the ATC!
