I thought I would post up a report from this trip to break the boredom here..
First of all the trip was blown out for Friday, Nov. 25 and rescheduled for Monday. Being fresh off of colon surgery and not 100% yet I was struggling with whether or not to go ahead and try it. But when they rescheduled it that eliminated the problem for me as I had to work. As it turned out they could not go Monday and rescheduled it again for Tuesday. 2' - 3' seas .....game on.
I recruited a newbie that had done a little Blackfin tuna fishing and AJ fishing and lots of kingfishing but never Yellowfin tuna. I loaned him a a Spheros 14000 (upgraded)and some Maguronis and topwaters and a Shimano TLD 30 II speed for chunking. Anyway here is his report from the trip.
Howdy, we were not able to stop for AJ's on the way back because we had no where to put them... We limited out with 11 fishermen , 33 yft and around 50-60 bft. Average size of the yft 70-90# class , a few went over 100#. I caught my first fish on a live flying fish using the spinning reel, mistake for sure, not much pumping action for the big yft. Took an hour to get him in., around the boat twice..lol... the next one was on a flying fish but with a different reel from the boat, just happen to be taking a break and had a rod handed off to me from captain Clint...lol standing in the wrong spot..lol... and the third fish we just pulled up for another drift and I started to chunk bft from the 2-speed you lent me..not 20 feet and fish on. that was fun. That was all before 1100 pm. the rest of the night I caught 5 bft, lost around 10-15 bft, lost two of my lures, fish just getting off at the boat. It was so much fun. The rig we went to was the Danson (he meant Nancen) Rig 160 miles east of Port A in 4500 feet of water, 2-3 foot seas at the most, slow swell out of the north..ideal i thought. We arrived around 5:45 pm, and fish were sounding and leaping in the air chasing flying fish when we arrived, so it was on instantly, the yft bite slowed after midnight, bft was consistent throuhout the whole night. Day break yft started again but smaller fish in the 40-50# range, we finally got our last large yft on board around 9:00 am, and headed home shortly thereafter.Got back at 730 pm , I figured it was a 38 !/2 hr trip.SO MUCH FUN. My total was 250# gross weight of fish, half of that was fillets. Great time for sure. I'll get of hold of ya this weekend to get the gear back to ya, thank you so much for the use, I have an idea now what I'm going to need for myself.
