I have quite a few '80s and '90s, 5500Cs 5500GRs (same as 5500c but made with graphite and thumbar), 6500Cs and 6500GRs. On some/most of these the drags are pretty rough/jerky. They are OK at lighter settings, but the more drag, the worse they become. What would you do to fix this and any idea on how much? thanks, capt david

About 7-10 a reel for carbontex washers depending on which drag stack they have (too lazy to do the checking myself).

I'd send them to CatfishHunter1963- Jim_ and let him work his magic on them......and he's real reasonable too.

Carbontex Drags will work wonders on them but a Dab of Cals Drag grease will work a miracle.

They are just dry, dirty or you have oiled the reel through the handle and gotten oil on them. Either way no real proble. Those reels have excellent drag systems.

For the life of me I cannot understand why reel manufacturers do not put drag grease in new reels. I guess they try and get the most "pound drag rating" out of them reqardless of how smooth they perform. A dry jerky drag is worse than overtightening the drag.

Heres the 411..... www.smoothdrag.com . I love my Abu's, and refuse to let them go. If you ever feel like really tricking out Abu's.....its like a Ruger 10/22....all you got to do is open your wallet and you can have anything you want. Mine has Carbontex washers, Abec bearings. And man, even my 4600 C3 can whip a bull reds arse.

Be well and good fishing.
