I didn't realize how much time it takes to do something like this...
Youtube only lets me upload about 14 minutes of finished video at a time. This video goes over deep water identification and sandbass vs. catfish.
Part 2 will deal more w/ sidescan and shallow water.

nice video, i have a HB 581I combo black and white though. I have only had it a few weeks, but my arches are not nearly defined as yours. I can spot bait fish but still needs more piddling with im sure. i like the fish symbols but was told not to use it becouse it is worthless. any sugestions. thanks for the video.

Rick, to get clear arches change your settings from either narrow or medium to WIDE (on your sonar beam) This will take care of the problem.
You don't need a sidescan for locating the larger fish in deep water. Truth is, after November, I rarely use my side imaging unless im hunting for shad.

Also, remember, the fish that are at the edge of the sonar beam will not give u defined arch...only the fish that are within 70% of the beam.

Thank you for the video, its going to help alot. Now a question, is there a way to place the temp and depth window that is on the left side of an 898 to the bottom like your 1198?
Thanks Michael, you are the only one bubba that will show anybody anything like that, we really appreciate it Amigo, never thought about setting sincitivity with a jig, I thought I was doing good if I could see the anchor or the cast net,
once again, Thanks Amigo!!!

You need to come to this one, this lake has a little of everything, it has lots of structure, creek channels, trees, bridges, rocks, it's a fun lake to fish, but it can humble you!!!

Thanks for the info. I just purchased a HB 898, and played with it this weekend. Looking forward to fine tuning it and learning how to read it more accurately. Can't wait for part two.

Each person developes there own relationship with there fishfinder, if you will. No one person will have there finder set up the same way, nor will they translate the screen they see the same way, yet they may both come to the same end result. I feel as though his video was informative, some of the things I agree with some I do not, to each is his own. I am a lowrance fan, that is the unit I have come to trust, and I have had good results with it. I can find fish from 5-100' with it. As far as sharing knowledge I am an open book, just ask me whatever you want. I am sure this video has helped quit a few people, and I hope it continues to help. You dont need a fancy fishfinder to find the fish, you just need to know where to look. You will never know all there is to know about catching the trophy blues, I still learn something everytime I get to go out (which recently is few and far between).
No matter how much anyone thinks they know its always good to keep an open mind and if you hear or see something that helps you out great if its something ya already knew then just use it as a refresher course.I try and learn something from everyone that gives me the chance to pick their brain.I have a Lowrance and a sidescan but to be honest lots of times I miss my old eagle 500c that thing put me on lots of fish.

Nuttin wrong with this response....not disrespectful or rude.....honest and states he agrees with some and not with some of it. From what I've seen on TFF last year and a half JMounger has always been informative and helpfull and I went fishing with him once on Benbrook and he was cool, willing to answer questions and all around nice guy. He(We) scouted the lake for an hour or so and he explained how he uses his sonar and what he was seeing and was informative and helpfull. I feel the same way about Micheal/CatfishSalsa.

I've thought for the last few years that the most informative fishing shows on the outdoor channels would be of how to operate and read your unit. You have outdone yourself here. Thanks for the help. The part on setting sensitivity and that the echo off the bone in the head are superb. You are a great teacher and I look forward to your next video. When do you plan on posting part 2?
Part one was just a teaser he is gonna sell the rest of the series!!!! LOL!!!

Did you really just say she has a screw loose?

Formerly bbop1111- (and still not really sure why)
Been telling her that for years!! She had neck surgery about ten years ago and it started bothering her again. She went and had it checked and sure enough she has a screw loose!!! Actually the bone graft didn't take so the screws wollered out. So I can get away with saying she has a screw loose!! I don't know what the rest of the female populations excuse is though!!! Lol wait a minute while I get this foot out if my mouth!!! Lol

The one thing I try to understand more than anything when looking at a fish finder is what are the fish doing. In my years fishing for big blues, bass, stripers, crappie, blue gill or whatever the important thing to learn is what are the fish doing that you see on the screen. Tiny's old thread about understanding your graph gave some great info on that. Like Jerad said each person has to learn what works for them. I kind of have a feel for what I see fish doing on the graph and I did not have a color graph until this last year. You need to beable to know if the fish are feeding, active/inactive or transitioning or just dormant. There will be days or parts of days where fish are in all phases on a giving body of water depending on your depth and location. One thing to remember about side scans is that the distance you set to the right or left is the bottom you see on the screen to the right or left of the water depth part of the screen. So if you see what you think is a giant fish and it 1/10 the lenght of the screen and you have it set at 100feet that is a 10 foot fish and unless you have giant gator gar in your lake it probably is not a fish. So keep in mind your scale on your screen. This is something that comes in very handy when locating brushpiles, trees and stumps. They may look little on the screen but in reality they may be as big as the boat.

+1 Tim.
One thing I will add to your observation is chart speed / boat speed. If you are scanning too fast or too slow or you do not have the machine scrolling at the right speed you can make a fish look large that is actually small and make a small fish look very large if your moving too slow.
