Braid vs Mono

Being fairly new to the area and enjoying my first summer of Texas fishing I've tried to meet several locals to get my attack plans right. Texas waters around Galveston are way different then what i grew up with in south Louisiana and i have noticed several folks here use braided lines. I've never gone that route and was wondering if anyone could suggest a pro's vs con's for the 2 (braid/mono)... Any other advice or pointers are also welcome! Thanks

The great things about braid are: it doesn't coil or stretch and it lasts a long time. It takes time to get used to, but if you get the hang of it, you'll never go back. I use a baitcaster and at first I had cussed the braid for the backlashes. And when it backlashes, it digs in deep. I kept experimenting with how I threw and got it down. I use 30lb. PowerPro with a 15lb. flourocarbon leader of about 2 feet. You will have to learn how to correctly fasten the braid with the flourocarbon as there are many knots that get it done. You will need some little scissors to cut the braid as clippers don't do a good job. With braid, I can feel hits faster and with no stretch, set the hook faster. Some people hate it, but I love it for lure fishing, which is all I do.

I sometimes go with a little lighter fluro leader especially if in an area where hang-ups are likely. it's easier to break-off 10 lb fluro than 15 or 20 lb.

I have fishing(fresh and saltwater)with spinning reels just with braid+fluorocarbon leader for over 10 years and i never go back fishing with mono. For the same lb.,braid is thinner comparativ with mono, stronger and it last long time.

I agree....
Quote: You will need some little scissors to cut the braid as clippers don't do a good job.
I go to the Dollar Store to buy a pair. They, in fact, cost a dollar and will last a weekend. They cut braid just great as opposed to clippers. They rust in the salt. These ae the kindergaden type.
I got so mad at a guy who was using my scissors to cut up cut bait! What are you doing????!!! Oh,you don't have a knife. What a DA!

Braid is great for everything but surf fishing. Braid has terrible abrasion resistance (compared to mono or fluorocarbon) against the sand. You will notice your braid will start to rub on the sand and slowly start to deteriorate. You can use braid on your reels, but make sure you have a long enough mono or flourocarbon topshot/leader. If you're fishing for redfish mostly, then I'd forego the fluorocarbon and go with mono, since redfish have poor vision and aren't leader shy anyway.

Dave, They are in the fishing section near scales and accessories. They are small with black handles. At least in Austin.

I like braid for popping corks. When you through it a long way it has zero stretch and lets you set the hook better against the cork. Just be careful when popping it, it will wrap on the rod tip and amazing sometimes what a hassle it is to get off. And yea on thelittle scizzors from Academy, work great and mine have held up. Braid will absolutely make you a better fisherman. At first the backlashes will haunt you, but stick with it, you'll be glad you did.

Thanks Phil. I'll hit the one in Round Rock today when it opens. It's way too early now. Even the fish are sleeping!

Braids are harder on my eyelets. The cheap rods can't handle the friction, and the eyelet rings come off...
Oh, and it's expensive.

good advice WB. Here is a link to shock leaders: Click It! Follow the link on that page to the Albright knot. Seems like a lot of guys are clueless when it comes to shock leaders and how they can help.

I love braid myself. We like to tie the boats together and have a "safe" party while at POC. Every so often the braid will get tangled w/ another ones line. It's almost impossible to untangle. One line WILL get cut.

i like both, i've got a curado spooled up with 30# power pro and a curado spooled up with 15# mono. i say i use the power pro 75% of the time, but i guess it also helps that i have that reel on my topwater rod and i throw tops a lot

The one thing about braid, is that you should use a lighter rod as well. For my spinning tackle,I use a medium action, fast tip rod. I use fireline smoke, 8lb and tie directly to the lure. Very sensitive, Casts a mile, lasts much longer than mono or floro. You will need scissors! BTW using a medium heavy rod, your just going to pull the lips off the fish, you'll most likely loose a lot of fish just taking the lure away prematurely. Talking spec's, red's, bass, and crappie. On my baitcaster's, again I use medium action rods with fast tips. I use heavier braid (30lb. for casting, 65lb for flipping) mainly so it doesn't bite down on it's self as bad. The smaller diameter really digs in whenever you hook up with a heavy fish or stump, log, etc...I use floro leaders when the fish are picky. The only draw back, it doesn't float! You need mono period for topwater!! Nothing tops mono for topwater! Best of luck, hope this helps.
