I'm planning on kayak fishing through the winter this year.
I've been looking into a dry suit for the upcoming winter season, any recommendations?
Or is a dry/wet suit necessary? I've spent lots of time outside in the winter however I've not had to worry about bulking up.
I was thinking a dry suit, all be it expensive, It would be nice to stay warm, dry, and not restrain full movement.

I use waders and a goretex jacked, it all depends on what/where you are going.

I used waders and dressed how I normally do in winter. With the Outback it isn't necessary but with my Ascend I would wear a rain coat over my coat to keep dry from the paddle drippings. There is no need to go artic. You'll only be in the water for a few seconds to get in and out the rest of the time your just sitting outside in the cold. Dress the way you always do. Layers are the key. Nothing is better than air for insulation.

I dress in my normal outdoor cold weather gear (under armor, flannel insulated jeans, etc), then I wear a rain suit over that. The rain suit of course keeps you dry, but works as a great wind breaker.

Arctic Armor will keep you and even some friends afloat should you turtle.
Arctic Armor will keep you from dying of hypothermia if you fall in.
the 100mph suit, while a pretty dang good rain suit, won't do either of those things.

Check out the video section of the website. I've tried the suit out before but I didn't buy one because they don't make the pants or the coat sleeves long enough for me.

The day they come out with an XXLT I will be placing an order that day.

That's some awesome gear right there. I can't seem to be able to find the cost though.

From what I saw only the green bay suit is sizes XL to XXXL. The other suits, red/black & camouflage comes in XS to XXXL jacket & pants sold separately. The black/green suit comes in S to XXXL jacket & pants sold separately too. I guess you really didn't do any research on this product

go back and re-read ren. you fail at failing.

You said the cheapest suit only came in XL to XXXL. I said that was because it (the cheapest suit) was for green bay fans who (meaning the fans) only come in sizes XL to XXXL. It was a joke about people from wisconson being fat. Not a commentary about the product. Next time don't try to correct your betters. grin

I start with wool undies and socks, then silk-tech base layer, a layer or two of fleece (depending on how cold it is), breathable waders, and a water/wind proof jacket with hood. Also, a weatherproof fleece beanie and those gloves that have exposed finger tips with removable mitten covers. DO NOT WEAR COTTON!

The key is proper layering to allow you to add/remove layers depending on weather conditions and your activity. Moisture wicking is also very important to get any sweat away from your body.

In cool weather I wear breathable waders. Stay comfortable as the day warms up. Layer up on top and peel down as the temperature rises through the day.
For those cold days I have neoprene waders, with heavy socks. Keep my head and feet warm and dry and the rest will be OK.
If it is much below freezing though I stay home. Not worth fighting the ice and the risk of death.

I usually wear a knit cap with a liner if it is colder.

I have tried neoprene gloves, but I have never found a pair that didn't leak. Seal Skins gloves work fairly well but not if it is really cold. This winter I am going to try a pair of Thinsulate water proof hunting gloves.

I am personally afraid of waders or rubber boots as they could easily fill with water and become anchors.

My personal preference is wearing a splash suit (jacket and pants) and my warn and comfy Chota Muc Lucs on my feet. Sequence wise, I wear a base layer mid-weight Capilene underwear, a PolarFleece 200 weight pullover, Stohlquist waterproof splash pants, and my splash top. Everything is synthetic and wicking so I stay warm, dry, comfortable and can layer as needed.

Water has a higher thermal conductivity than air, meaning it can transfer heat much quicker, so you lose your body heat faster when you're wet than dry. In summer that's a good thing, winter not so much.

When cotton gets wet it loses it's insulating value, doesn't pull moisture away from your body, takes a long time to dry, and will accelerate hypothermia.

Wool and fleece (basically synthetic wool) retain most of their insulating value when they get wet. Also, wool/fleece help pull moisture away from the skin to keep you dry if you get wet or start sweating too much. The thickness of wool & fleece traps air which is a great insulator.

Oh, follow the manufacture's suggestion when washing wool, fleece, and polyester. Don't use fabric sheets like Bounce, they put a coating on the fibers that will prevent them from wicking moisture away from the body. Any clothes that I wear outdoors made of those fibers are always air dried.

Completely false. The water insider your waders has the same weight as the water outside your waders. Thus while in the water you have neutral bouyance. Meaning you won't sink like an anchor just because your waders are full of water.

However, waders full of water do make it quite difficult to re-enter a kayak.
