To me, nothing tastes better than a great hamburger steak with grilled onions. Does anyone else enjoy at least a 1/2 pound of well-seasoned ground hamburger, perfectly charred, with a side of grilled onions? One of the best I've found is the one at Fuddruckers. Where have you found any other great ones in Texas?

Isn't that just a good hamburger? Serious question.

Isn't that just a good hamburger? Serious question. Not necessarily. Usually a hamburger will only be seasoned with just salt and pepper. A "good" hamburger steak will have additional seasonings (garlic powder or garlic salt, chopped onions or onion powder, Lea and Perrins, chopped bell pepper (or other pepper), BBQ seasoning or sauce, etc.). It will also be on the thicker side ~~ 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick. Some will make their hamburger steak oval rather than round like a hamburger patty.

I love 1/2lb hambuger steak off the grill with onions and seasonings. They are hard to find in a restaurant, but homemade is the way to go. Here in Hawaii, they have hambuger steak everywhere on the menu, but its a little bit different than the way we eat back home. This is a charco broiled patty, smothered in brown mushroom gravy and onions over a bed of rice. You can also put a egg on top too . Very filling and not so great on the cardio side. Aloha

I like to get some good cuts of steak at Costco, trim them up, run them through a grinder, and shape them into thick patties. Only way to go, if you prefer them medium rare. I don't recall the in's and out's, but I've read that restaurants are required to serve "hamburger" grade beef well done. The patties freeze well, so I usually make up a bunch of them.
You can get a decent, well done chopped steak at Grady's in San Antonio. Not great, but decent, and the price is right. Nice selection of veggies, too.

I had a great classic hamburger steak w/brown gravy/grilled onions at the Agave Bar & Grill in Stephenville Tx, a couple of weeks ago. Great little restaurant that is part of the City Limits Club complex - very reasonable prices.

Have to agree with the home made variety. The onions, pepper, various seasoning mentioned are all good. Also like the thicker ones shaped in an oval shape. I had a worthless uncle who ran restaurants in east Texas and Okla., but one thing I learned from him as a kid was an extra addition which makes the hamburger steak better. He would mash about a half wrapper of crackers and add it to the meat (1 1/2 lbs.) before cooking and mixing the other ingredients. I have always made them this way and everyone seems to like them. You'll wind up with three nice steaks. It helps hold the meat together while grilling but you don't notice them in the finished product at all. I usually add some worchestershire to the mix as well and baste them with it while cooking.

Zentners Daughter or just about any eating establishment in San Angelo has excellent H/B steaks every Thursday as the lunch special. Actually it's either H/B steak or C/F steak for the Thursday special, your choice and it's a hard one. Hand cut french fries or baked potatoe, salad and Texas toast with tea included in the meal price. Can't wait for Thursdays!
