Wanted to see if any of our fellow members had any comments or reviews about this reel. I own a bait caster for surf fishing but im in need of a reel so i can do some fresh water fishing (bass/cats/reds).

The reviews I have read on the BCX is that they are not holding up well under heavy use. I've heard rumers that Abu is going to make some changes in that line, but it may only be rumor. I thiink I would go with the C3. it's not that much more for what you get,

Dont buy a bcx model! You can get a Swedish model for almost the same price.

Well i dont fish that often and i only ask cause they have a reel rod combo at walmart for $60.

On a side note, would this be the kind of reel you can use for bass fishing?

I actually own one of the R&R combos from walmart, they suck! You can use an Abu for any type of fishing you want to do.

Good luck the first time you use it. It will probably be close to the last. But then you get what you pay for.

it's amazing to me how many of those are broken before they get off display...

I have a box full of them that I just pitch when the customers send them in for repairs. They just say throw them away. I thought I would fix a few and give them to the boys club but I think the cast control cap and the handle stays and the rest goes away. Most of these reels have not been used much but are out of the 1 year warranty period. I wish Pure Fishing would quit marketing them with the Garcia name and let someone use somthing like Shakespear so folks will get what they expect. Being Red and Round folks think they are getting a true Garcia reel.

$80 instead of $50, but its a swedish made reel, and you will get much much more use out of it than a BCX.

I concur and when you have gotten it dirty later you can have it cleaned and the bushings changed out with bearings and you will really have an excellent reel

The reel on this combo mentioned above from Academy will last you a lifetime with proper care.

Check Ebay for a 4600/5500/6500 C3 reel. Parts are still available from the factory, and the "real" Abus are tanks.

Im a lover of Abu's...but even I will admit that those BCX reels are pure fish poop.

Whether you fish once a month....once a year...or once a day, buy the quality equipment you need, cause that trophy fish you just hooked doesnt care that this is the only trip your gonna take this year....HE'S GONE !!!

Unfortunately the BCX model is not up to snuff in most cases. Here in the shop I have seen quite a few come in for repair. The most notable issue has been the worm. It seems that after the pawl starts to wear it starts to destroy the worm causing the line guide to stick and eventually to freeze rendering the reel useless until repaired. In order to be competetive and keep the cost of a new reel down reel makers are using lighter and less material in new reels which will show itself in the future.

I have a 5500 C3 that I got as a Christmas present last year. It turns out that it is to big for me to fish all day with comfortably but it is one heck of a reel. Smooth and strong. I may turn it into my river reel or donate it to my Dad for horsing in Redfish. Heck, I may even try to sell it.
