The best steak in Texas is the one you make yourself. But, if you wanted to get a great steak in Texas where would we go?
All of us can find great tasting steaks, but you usually have to pay high dollar, so let's hear where we can find one that the average person can afford ~~ say under $20 for the entree.
Personally, I like a good ribeye.

Tom Thumb. Beer and wine is cheaper too...
More serious answer.....I haven't tried it yet but I've heard several times that the steaks at Texas Roadhouse are really good at reasonable prices.

You might just about get out for $20 with the filet at Montana Mike's, maybe even cover a modest gratuity. I'm sure it's not USDA Prime, but it's tender, and if you request it "medium rare," it will come to you pink and juicy. If you haven't eaten in three days, though, this isn't going to work for you.

if you think texas roadhouse has good steak, you dont like steak or have never had a good one. under 20 bucks is hard to find a decent steak anywhere in a restaurant $20 was just a figure to start with. You can find great steaks for $30+. I realize that you get what you pay for. The Rig on Alta Mesa and I35W in FTW has an 8 oz. ribeye for about $9 that is thin but quite good. The 12 oz. is a bit more expensive. I've not tried their other steaks.

You can't beat a Tom Perini steak, but coming in under $20 is going to be a mite tough. I remember when Lowake was the be-all end-all of steaks in Texas, but the last time we went (around 2yrs. ago), it was the most tasteless excuse for steak I've ever eaten. We got the KC for two, and as usual, had enough for 4-5 people but it had no flavoer-it was like eating water disguised as steak. Not sure about now, but Zentner's and Zentner's Daughter in San Angelo used to be great as well. I think the original Zentner's closed down though...

In Dallas, at the corner of Harry Hines and Burbank, is Dunston's Steak House. Easy to get a steak w/baked potato and salad for under $20.00. I challenge u to find a better steak! Look em up, they are on the web.

if you think texas roadhouse has good steak, you dont like steak or have never had a good one. ok were, put your steak were your mouth is. outback and saltgrass have steaks right around $20 and are way better on there worst day than texas road house on there best, may not be the best stake but way better than TRH and if you up it to $25-$30 they both offer an descent porter house if you have the money to spend i recommend pappas bros., Al biernats or III forks

Been going to Dunstons on Lovers Ln since the early 80's. Their mesquite grilled steaks and baked tater are hard to beat, plus salad bar. Make sure to go to the back door bar there, it is the place to drink & eat.

Good tips on here...Logans Roadhouse should be on the list. IMO way better than Texas Roadhouse and you can get on their e-mail list and occasionally get 2-1 coupon deals. With that you can get 2 steak dinners with sides for under $20. I agree. Had a decent sirloin there in New Braunfels for under $20. Great steaks aren't under $20. If you have been to one of the high end steak houses you know what I mean. Absolute best steak I ever had at any price was at The Palm of Westheimer in Houston.

Order the porterhouse at Ponder Steak House for about $30 and share it with the lady in your life - she gets the tenderloin and you get the NY strip (that's a cut of steak, not a dance).

I love me some Western Sizzlin! Good and cheap! When we were little that was a night out for our family. OKC has a place called The Cimmiron Steakhouse, good little steak,a baker a salad with tea and tip less than $10.00.

Texas Roadhouse over Logan's, IMO. TRH had a very tender, grissle free Ribeye.
Last week at Logan's, after eating half of my Ribeye, my jaws were sore.

A small filet is only $10.00. Also, it is one of those places with that lived in look because it has been there forever.

Outlaw in Amarillo has a ribeye on their lunch menu for 12.99. There are some well known steak places in Amarillo but I prefer theirs for taste, price and atmosphere.

The best steak I've ever eaten, I've cooked, there is a meat market in corpus called Moody's Quality Meats. It is fantastic. Like cut your steak with the side of your fork good...
As far as a restaurant, we used to go to Texas Road House. IMO best bang for the buck. (although the last 2 times I went, we had issues)

The big Texan in Lubbock has steaks that are pricey, around 20 to 25 dollars for a big steak. If you are in the area, they have one of the best breakfast buffets ever for about 8.95

Country Inn Steakhouse by Lake Sommerville. Huge portions of most mouth watering tender steak you will ever eat. They also have chicken fried steak that cuts effortlessly with your fork. Haven't been there in quite a few years but compare every steak I ever eat to this place, and have yet to find a better one.

Dunstons is good and reasonable but if you haven't eaten at the Lowake Steak House or Twin Mountain in San Angelo you really need to make the trip. When I see everyone talking about the chains like Logans, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, etc... I think that consistency of product over rides superior taste. That's too bad but, I understand when cost is a prime factor.

T-Bone Tom's in Kemah has a good selection of "cheap eats" steaks. They have several choices for right around $20 & I've never had a bad steak there. On Tuesday evenings the dinner special is prime rib; 8oz for $14 or 12oz for $20.

If I'm not cooking, Chuck Wagon Steakhouse in Bluff Dale (south of Granbury on 377) is darn good. Sometimes, they will put their 20 oz ribeye for $25...normally, $30. It's cut off the roll when you order it. http://www.chuckwagonsteakhouse.com/

if you think texas roadhouse has good steak, you dont like steak or have never had a good one. Ate a CFS at a Texas Road House near Houston a week ago. It was the thinnest CFS I have ever seen. The sides were good but the steak will not be repeated.

Outback 6 0z sirloin is pretty good. I eaten several there. Always good and cooked just right.

if you think texas roadhouse has good steak, you dont like steak or have never had a good one. I agree. Even the beautiful NY Strips have no flavor. Sometimes the fish fillets are still frozen in the center when served. Peanuts are ok but burned.

Outback is disgusting. When they first came out it was a different story. They will not get another dollar out of me.
Logan's is ok. I have never eaten a bad steak at Roadhouse and for the money it usually can't be beat.
In Graford,TX there is a place called The Steak Shed and has really good food. It is only open on Friday and Saturday night and for $22 you get to choose between a Tbone, Ribeye, and Filet. It is a good choice.

Well, since you said in Texas:
Devil's River Motel (by the airstrip) in Sonora. They got "KC Steak for Two" (a huge plate stacked a foot high) garlic encrusted steaks. I've never tasted better. Except my own.
