I feel that some people are intimidated by falcon and If what i'm about to write can help one person go down there and have a trip of a life time then it was worth it. We left on Thursday about 2 and headed south to Zapata, tx. I have driven both the back roads from San Antonio and also driven 35 to Laredo. In my opinion it is much safer and quicker to take 35 all the way down. We stayed at the best western which is a little bit more pricey then some of the other local spots (87 dollars a night). They had free breakfast and free beer every day. We had 3 people on our trip so 3 free meals and beverages added up. The place was extremely clean and very accommodating, comfortable beds etc. From Best Western you can use the county ramp which is about a mile away.
Location: We fished 2 different spots for 2.5 days. I didn't feel that there was any need to go looking for fish in such a short trip once we found a few. One spot was a main lake point and the second was a cove that had rocks, brush, secondary points and deep water. These two spots were about a 8 minute drive from the county ramp and were located in Mexico. Its not rocket science.
Presentation/depths etc. It seemed that the fish liked the mag fluke on a half ounce weight more then any other bait in our arsenal. We chose a watermelon red mag fluke, half oz tungsten weight rigged on a 7o owner hook. This presentation represented about 90 percent of our fish. The second plastic that also worked well was a 7 inch yumdinger in mardi gras (bet you haven't ever heard that in a falcon report lol) First thing in the morning you couldn't throw too shallow. A square bill in a shad pattern will get you some numbers in a hurry! Then once the sun would rise it seemed that the 4-6 ft bite was more productive. When the sun got highest in the sky the bite was best in 8-12 ft of water in the tops of bushes. If you can find anything that looks different with ROCK and BRUSH the fish WILL be there. (ie hump, secondary point, mainlake point, ledge.) Our deepest fish were in about 18ft but majority were 8-12ft when it was high sky and hot. Crank baits with some green in them also produced. We would just crank them right into the bush and hang on. Also every single 8+ fish we caught was in 8-12 ft but within 1 cast of 18+ deeper water. (I thought that was interesting)
Casting vs Flipping Earlier in the day we would try and make the long casts and hit as many bushes along the way. Once the sun was high it was best to flip. Put the boat right next to the bush and drop it straight down.
The heat. This worried me because I have never gone to Falcon in August. We drank lots of water and used good sun screen and proper clothing. Not once did it ever feel nearly as hot as it does in DFW. The humidity down there makes 100 degrees there feel much different then 100 degrees in DFW.
Length of stay. We stayed for 3 nights and fished 2.5 days... our groups work/school schedule only permitted us to be able to take one day off. This was PLENTY of fishing and we left tired, worn out with sore ribs and raw thumbs
The fish. I think we had about 130-140. We ended up catching four 9 pounders. one 8 pounder, seven 7 pounders and so many 4s,5s, and 6s we stopped counting. Your average fish down there is a solid 3 pounds.
I know this is lengthy but I had a lot of unanswered questions on my first trip and maybe this will help at least one person have the fishing trip of a lifetime. If you have any more questions about any part of the trip please feel free to PM me. Falcon lake is a wonderful place to go and have the fishing trip of your life.
tight lines, Barrett

+1 on that report. Been there four times from the end of May to the end of July. That report is about as accurate as you can get for Falcon with out giving waypoints. You really do not need someones waypoints to find great fishing on Falcon.

You may want to try and haggle on that price with Best Western, stayed there this spring for $65 a night but I had to work with them

-Alton about 7 hours. I can make it from my driveway to zapata in 8 hours 15 minutes but thats only stoping once and driving 70 the entire way.

If we concentrated on the really important stuff in life,
there'd be a shortage of fishing poles

+1 this is an excellent idea. Next time I will be sure and do that. Thanks for the advice! Good write up, Barrett. Try and make our trip, too. If you book under my name (Smithey), you will receive a $70/night room rate. Ask for Charlene, 956-765-8403. I think she's only going to hold about 10 rooms at that price. Normal rate is like $90 I think. Good Falcon Fishin' Okie
