Thanks for your service, I love that family members can benefit from another's service. I have a few vets in the family, I wish I had known about this when I started. Wreck'Em Tech! What is she gonna study out there?

Unless things have changed, I thought the only way you could pass the hazel wood act to your children was if you were 100% disabled or was killed in combat.

Are you saying that you only need to be a Texas Veteran to pass it to your children?

if you read the link originally posted...

Transferability of Benefits (Legacy Program)

Eligible Veterans may assign unused hours of exemption eligibility to a child under certain conditions. To be eligible, the child must:

Be a Texas resident,
Be the biological child, stepchild, adopted child, or claimed as a dependent in the current or previous tax year,
Be 25 years or younger on the first day of the semester or term for which the exemption is claimed (unless granted an extension due to a qualifying illness or debilitating condition), and
Make satisfactory academic progress in a degree, certificate, or continuing education program as determined by the institution.
If a child to whom hours have been delegated fails to use all of the assigned hours, a veteran may re-assign the unused hours that are available to another dependent child.

I did not read the link…I separated a few years ago and set through many different benefit briefings. I remember this question being specifically asked. I do not remember the exact answer but I know that there was some eligibility requirements that I did not meet.

According to this link, the eligibility requirements are simple. This is good to know. I guess I was given some bad information when I got out or things changed.

Thanks

This act passed in 2009. Your child will get a college education if you did the Hazlewood Act. I got lucky I became a federal agent 17 years ago. I never went to college. Believe me this ACT does work my daughter is going to Texas Tech already.

Hmmm this is interesting. Before you had to be 100% disabled to transfer it. I'll have to do some double checking on VBN and verify. If so this is pretty awesome. Benefits like this are a reason to join. Another thing... I'm almost positive it has to be a state funded public university. Private schools are exempt from tuition waiver.

Is there a designation as to when you served? I looked all through that and not one thing about when your service was. I got out in 86.

If you were separated with an honorable discharge. As long as it wasn't dishonorable. I have my paperwork right here on my desk. I didn't know about this until Marine started this thread. Not yet sure if I am going to use it or transfer to one of my 3 kids or share it.
