Technically, it's not in Texas but you can see the Red River from the restaurant.

There's something about Catfish places in East Texas. I'll mention a couple:
1. Big Pines Lodge - Caddo Lake/Uncertain Texas ( original burned down, but they are supposed to be rebuilding it.
2. Spruell's in Dodridge Ark ( just across the Texas Arkansas line - near Atlanta Texas
3. Vaughn's in Mt. Pleasant Texas
In Dallas.. there's
Hook, Line and Sinker, Aw/Big Shucks, and Flyin Fish...

Can anyone recommend anything around San Antonio? Clear Springs Cafe, with Sea Island a close second, is about the best I've found. Any "Old Timers" remember that catfish barn near Tyler? Noonday, I think the community was called. Can't remember the name of the place--may have been Red's. I went about 100 miles out of my way to eat there, about 10 years or so ago, and found the place had burned to the ground. The locals I talked to told me the owner bought only from local catfish farmers, and wouldn't buy a fish that wasn't still alive. Now that was catfish.

That was probably Red Ackers on hwy 315 south of Chandler near Flat Creek bridge on Palestine. Was hard to beat. They opened a new big place on hwy 155 south of Tyler after that.

Red Ackers, that's it. They told me he was closed for good. Long drive from SA. The pickeled tomatos and made-from-scratch hushpuppies they started you off with hit the spot too.

I think he is talking about a place called Meats and Sweets, right off 78 in Lavon on the right before you get to the Lavonia Park entrance across the street from the Exxon gas station. I have never tried it, but live in Lavon and will try it now.

Cooks Fish Barn 3661 Highway 36, Comanche Tx. All you can eat catfish, french fries, hush puppies, salad bar and desert for around 10 to 15 $. They also have fied chicken and a steak menu. They are open only Friday and Saturday and have local talent jamming on old country tunes later in the evening. I try to go whenever Im at the inlaws place in DeLeon.

David Beards Catfish Kitchen on I20 at FM 134 Waskom also on 155 near Ore City. The Tall Pines Lodge is open but seems to be having problems getting the food on the table in a timely manner.

Hucks in Denison and Sherman has some of the best catfish I've ever eaten except for that I cook myself. They are right off 75 at the Loy Lake exit in Denison and I think are located in downtown Sherman (haven't been to that location).

Clear Springs has good fried fish... now i may get whipped for saying this, but any time i'm in Bass Pro i stop by the restaurant and order their fried catfish. it's perfectly battered with a thin coating of cornmeal and fried perfectly. i love it from there, it's just a little $$$

Try the 410 Diner catfish sometime. It's a little unusual--one large filet. One of the waitresses told me it is delivered fresh daily. It's a good cut above Sea Island. Really hits the spot with fried zucchini, an off-menu item.

Took a closer look at the 410 Diner catfish last night. I was mistaken about it being a single filet. It is actually a single fish dressed butterfly fashion with every speck of dark and fatty meat removed. Never seen that anywhere else. Counted 20 items on the vegetable blackboard, and the cornbread was great.

The best catfish is at my house. A little salt and pepper, rolled in corn meal and skillet fried in realy hot grease until the outside turns crisp. it doesn't need anything more. The older the oil, the better the fish. I don't change the oil, I just keep addingto it. The same grease sees the fried shripm also. You can't have fride catfish without shrimp. The shrimp get a little more attention than the fish does.

Pier 35 in Burleson is now open. Good catfish fillets. I'd recommend checking this place for yourself.

I used to love Sudie's when I lived in Houston. The one in pasadena was my favorite. I think they recently opened up a second one in league city.

Southern Comfort Kitchen in LaPorte. Yummy. Sudie's pretty good too, but I like SCK better.

I don't care for the thick chunks that haven't been trimmed of fat so no to Big Daddys in Odessa. I can't remember the name of the large restaurant in the edge of Huntsville that specializes in fried catfish but it's well known all over Huntsville and deservedly so.

I have to agree. Find out if their fish come in a box or local. I've been to the joint in Caddie lake. Right on the water if I saw right they were taking live cats in the back door! The longer a fish is dead the less the quality of meat.

Lisa's Fried Chicken believe it or not. Division and Davis. Arlington Secret: When making at home, trim the fatty layer from the top of the fillet and remove the center rib from it as well. (Lots of restaurants don't prep it like this and it tastes fishy and it's got that gross gelatinous consistency from the non-trimmed stuff) Dip in lemon/lime juice. Dredge in cornmeal mixed with a bit of paprika, salt and black pepper. Fry 350-375 peanut oil in a deep fryer. No need to go out again

Zeke's Fish & Chips is pretty darned good. Jeezus, I completely forgot about Zeke's. They have the best fried eggplant & Zucchini I've ever had - the cod & catfish are top notch, as well. Zeke's has been in the same spot on Camp Bowie for 41 yrs so they are definitely doing something right.
