Not in Texas unless you fish tournaments according to Bennie or if the boat is being financed by a bank. I would still carry some liability insurance at the least if I were you.

Insurance is a definite. Never know when something may go wrong. IE; stumps, trailer tire blow outs, electrical damage, vandalism, theft, lost stolen, stolen, or damage equipment. List goes on and on. Can not go wrong in purchasing insurance. Never know. Better to have than not have it when you need it. Plus it isn’t that expensive.

Nathan, Insurance is a complete must! Persons who say otherwise must have nothing to lose.
I pay cash for all my boats so insurance is not necessary by law... unless I want to fish tournaments larger than a roll-over prize or guide for hire. However, what if I have destruction? Damage someone else's property or, poorer quality yet, hurt someone? If you don't have the right insurance coverage’s, YOU will stand all legal fees when the claimant sues you. In adding, you could drop everything you have depending on the damages. At the very least you will be on the hook for all repairs, if there's anything left to repair. Never know. Better to have than not have it when you need it. Plus it isn’t that expensive.

So are rates different if you fish tournaments? I remember my SF ins agent asking me if I fished tournaments when I got insurance. Told him no since I never have fished any, but just wondering in case I ever do.
