Well decided I was going to practice my casting skills and figued I might as well use a fly. First fish was a little sunfish and second was a decent bass, both were caught on poppers that were given to me by Bass Bug. Thanks Bass Bug

Congratulations. You know you'll have to take the plastic off of the grip eventually, right? Seriously, a good greenie and a nice bass are a great start to your fly flinging endeavors.

yeah I realized that I hadn't removed it after catching the Bass, not a bad day for practicing my casting, may try to get out a little earlier in the day tomorrow so it is not so stinking hot.

you know I like it I have a reel like that, lots of folks will say not such good things about graphite/plastic/composite/whatever you call it, but I really really like those reels.

I figure its a good reel to learn with, worst case I tear it up and get another one until I learn to cast and use it right.
Bass Bug-I did lose 2 of the poppers you sent me, one the fish broke off right as I was trying to bring him up to lip him and it floated off into the pond. The other was on of the bluegill ones, I didn't have it tied on very well and when the fish hit it away it went. Do you have a post on how you make them? I may try my hand at it.

Tmds3, Our similarities are uncanny. I have the same rod/reel as you. 6 weeks ago I began this fly fishing odyssey and caught identicle fish on a popper my wife made...I have yet put the flyrod down except while at the coast just not ready for that just yet....Im still just as likely to hook myself or anything near me as getting the darn thing into the water, but i get better each day....great job on your fish.

Well I am getting better at casting, have been working on accuracy, not distance, and am getting to where I can get it pretty much where I want it, I have now started working on distance. The fish were just a bonus, but a good one. Good Luck on your venture.

It all comes with time. I still can't hit those 90' casts every time. I guessing it is because I switch between 4-6-8wt rods frequently and some I use floating and sinking. I also broke the tip off of my 4wt 9'3" rod and bought a Sage VXP 7'9" to replace it while it is getting repaired.

Now you are allowed to take the plastic off the handle of your fly rod.

Welcome to your new obsession.
I figured he left the plastic on it in case he wanted to return it...
