Wow, that place was an utter disaster the few times I went, there were more flies on my plate than ribs. The brisket was chewy, bland and well quite frankly bill millers is better. Just completely completely terrible. Heck that place isn’t even the best BBQ place in Huntsville. They used to have great bbq, but then the guy died. Someone else took it over, and it went downhill fast. I haven’t been there since college, but definitely not ever going to go back.

WE used to go because it was cheap and all you can eat. But that ended, after a couple trips and we settled on the 5 dollar burgers at Mckenzies.

Not kidding at all. I think Rudy's is very good, if a bit expensive. Ever tried their breakfast burritos? Muy excellente!

The best bbq I've found in the Fort Worth area is "Off the Bone" at 5144 Mansfield Hwy in Forest Hill.

I won't say the "best in Fort Worth" because I have not been to every bbq place in Fort Worth, but based on my experience, it is the best tasting bbq. An added plus is "super friendly people".

Try it out! See for yourself.

Spring Creek comes in a close second.

Spring Creek has excellent ribs, and the hot rolls are also a nice touch. Rudy's and Sonny Bryan's have excellent brisket. The only really disappointing BBQ I remember having recently was at Angelo's in Fort Worth, which may have been the go-to BBQ joint back in The Day, but The Day has long since passed for them.

I actually agree with you on Angelo's

BUT Excellent and Spring Creek/Rudy's/Sonny Bryan's just don't go together...more like acceptable or decent.

Care for a fun story about bbq?

In the late 50's / early 60's my dad worked for a bbq place in Bossier City, LA. They had a special of 10 bbq sandwiches for $1. My dad told me that the bbq was only oatmeal with bbq sauce.

I always laughed at that idea until I worked for a mexican fast food place who put a "gallon" of oatmeal into 10 pounds of beef for their tacos.

We are rounding out many of the Texas top 50 right now. The best I have had didn't make the list because they are brand new. Its a new place in Corsicana, I think it's called Clydes.

As far as places you have heard about: Mac's tops the list. Way better than any one of the places listed here so far. And I have eaten at them all.

This is probably apples and oranges, but has anyone tried the legendary beef rib at Black's in Lockhart? It comes attached to a huge chunk of beef--what we would call "prime rib" or "ribeye," I would suppose. I doubt anyone who weighs under 300 lbs could handle more than one. It tastes like prime grade beef to me, and raises the bar to a new level. Only thing, it's way too expensive for ordinary fare.

That is about all I get there now, poboy, sliced beef and sausage, with extra of the black stuff. It is probably one of my favorite meals in town.

The son's and brother-in-laws own the Mac's now. And they all do it a little different, I like the brisket in gregory, and the ribs in Rockport. The "fore" in corpus uses oak instead of mesquite. But the last 2 times I was over there, they had hotlamp burn on their meat. So it wasn't any good.

Also, I haven't been to the original coopers in years, but I REALLY REALLY liked them. But i went to the one in New Braunfels the meat was cooked well, just they must have just spilled the pepper on the meat, had to take a knife out and scrape it off...

You know what used to be a good BBQ place, was Joe Cotton.

I go to the Cooper's in New Braunfels from time to time. The pork tenderloin is so good I've never tried anything else. I can't tell the difference from the original establishment in Llano. Always juicy and tender. It didn't seem over seasoned to me. Their holiday hams are also first rate. I understand they have a meat packing operation near Llano somewhere.

The last time I stopped by the Luling City Market, there were about a hundred people lined up waiting to get to the counter. Probably had something to do with the Saturday outdoor market.

All the hate on Rudys is because it's a chain. I've been to the majority of the BBQ hotspots and I think it holds it's own. I'm not saying it's the best, but it's pretty damn good and like a previous poster mentioned their breakfast is a thing of beauty.

I have inquired about Miss Mae's. We've been going to Wimberley the last couple of years over memorial Day weekend and have wanted to try it. We were going to this year but ended up at Brewster's instead for beer and pizza. Will definitely give her a try next year (and stop at Wimbelrey Pie Co. on the way back for dessert.....)

Best I've ever had was Smitty's in Lockhart. Cooper's is always good, but I prefer the Llano location. I've heard their new Fort Worth location is good but I haven't been there. Mesquite BBQ in Mesquite is pretty dang good, in my opinion as is Mac's in Dallas.

Texas Pride on 1604 S., kind of between 1-35 N. and Calaveras, is the best I've come across in San Antonio. Looks like it was built in the 40's, and left pretty much unchanged. They have a YouTube clip on their web site, showing how they prepare the meats and whatnot. The place is huge, but not terribly crowded weekdays.

I guess if nothing else this thread shows great BBQ is subjective and dependent on individual taste.

But for what it is worth my wife says my brisket is best!!! laugh

There is a brand new place down town called Meat Market BBQ. It's by far the best in the city. SA is not know for good BBQ as most of it sucks, but this place is legit

There's a place in Brady TX that is known as the home of the "big chop". They had some of the best BBQ I've had in TX. I can't remember their name because of the pork comma they put me in. smile

Luling is good but I don't care much for their BBQ sauce. Way too much mustard for my taste. We have one in Houston. It's Luling City Market and has very good meats.

They're tight with their sauce too. Do they still put it in Tobasco bottles so you have to shake it out by the drop?

Great ribs nonetheless.

Coopers in Llano had the best pork loin I have had to date, but as for the brisket... it had to be one of the worst I've had so far. over rated in my opinion

I can't recall ever having had pork loin as good as that served at Cooper's in both Llano and New Braunfels. I'm particularly fond of the barbeque sauce, which is light and lively, not thick and sugary. I drove over for their weekend ribeye and baked potato special the other day, though, and was disappointed. That was one tough piece of meat. Perhaps the quality of the beef they receive is inconsistent. Never tried the brisket.

Lots of good bbq in texas.

SaltLick was not mentioned - Austin
Stanley's - Tyler - Get the Bro-In-Law. MMmmmmm!
Clark's is not bad - Tioga

Nothing like true Pit-bbq. Not knocking all the folks that like Rudy's/Spring Creek, but these smaller pit bbq places are just flat out a different class of bbq.

This is one of those my wife's better lookin' than your wife kind of discussions, but I gotta vote for the butcher's place-Luling City Market in Luling or Houston, but Luling is better. Smitty's is awful good. Salt Lick in Driftwood Springs. But, I will say, the spicy chop breakfast burrito at Rudy's is kick butt!! Final vote is for the original Bodacious in Longview, used to be GREAT.

Oh yeah, my wife is better lookin' than all of ya'alls!!

Marlin, are you talking about Hard Eight in Brady? One in Coppell is pretty darn good. But, their jalapeno corn is good enough to be a meal!

i agree with foul hook. the old standard used to be the spare rib in greenville. a true pit master is hard to beat. most chains cook on southern pride electric smokers....not that there is anything wrong with that.

Hey Ray

man I used to LOVE Bodacious. Now in Huntsville and Conroe they have McKenzies and they sell Bodacious BBQ Sauce. I asked if there was a connection and one guy said he thought one these were a spin off. You know of that?

I agree about Cooper's in Llano. Everything there is good except for the brisket which is always tough and to me undercooked. It has been like that for 20 years since I have been going there. I keep trying it and it dosn't get any better. I just think it need about two more hours on the heat than it would be great. They do have the best beans in Texas and they come all you can eat with the meat for free.

There used to be a BBQ place in Kaufman and it wasn't very good. Then they changed to now being named Jackson Street BBQ. It is Eddie Dean's BBQ and it is some of the best I have ever had in fact the ribs are the best I think I have ever tasted. They have some great really big bread rolls also. I have now been there quite a few times and it has been great everytime. They are in the town square in Kaufman.

Some GREAT barbecue can be had in LINDSAY, TEXAS at SMOKEHOUSE BARBECUE!

It is right on the highway heading west out of GAINSVILLE, TEXAS. About 5 or 6 miles, on the right.

It is totally great and if you like ONION RINGS along with your barbecue then you will LOVE the onion rings there!

You get a HUGE plate of barbecue with the regular order but if you are a GLUTTON you can get the large plate which will cause you to WADDLE out of the place since you will be so full!

Wifey gets the fries and I get the onion rings and we "share" our food! Best of both worlds!

Next time you are near Gainsville check out SMOKEHOUSE BARBECUE in Lindsay. Just stay on 82 west about 5 miles or so out of Gainsville.

You will NOT be disappointed!! thumb

Used to be a place on the square in Kaufman, I believe, called Zaby's. Really popular back in the day with the locals, but I always though it was pretty bad BBQ. Glad to hear there is something better there now.

I would have to say Snow's has the best brisket. You don't even need sauce. I also like Schoup's BBQ for the sirlion.
All around best would have to be Coopers, Snows or Bastrop BBQ.
Bastrop BBQ is owned and run by Mr. Cartright and he can cook anything on that pit.

Bodacious, is not good at all. About the only good there is the chopped beef covered in barbeque sauce. There brisket is dry and there sausage taste and looks like a grocery store brand.

Anyone try Bastrop BBQ?

I won't say the "best in Fort Worth" because I have not been to every bbq place in Fort Worth, but based on my experience, it is the best tasting bbq. An added plus is "super friendly people".

Try it out! See for yourself.

Spring Creek comes in a close second.

I eat there abour twice a month since I work right down the road, they are decent, not the best in Ft. Worth though

Didn't say it was the best in Fort Worth ~~ just the best I've found.

There's a new place ( I think ) in Lewisville called Fat Cow BBQ. It's in a strip mall, so...I dunno...kinda leery.

Anyone tried it though? Always willing to give a place a shot.

Real fond of Old House BBQ lately, the folks who run the place that used to be Al's Chuckwagon are doing a really good job. After Al's Chuckwagon it was a couple different places that weren't as good.

But the people who run Old House now have done it right, and make some great Que.

Cooper's pork chop is amazingly good and the sausage is fine. Just remember that Cooper's isn't really bbq. They cook everything directly over the coals, even the brisket.. So they grill everything, not smoked bbq. I've never cared for their brisket, a bit tough and well... not smoked. Works for the pork chop and sausage, not so much for everything else.. Their pinto beans are exceptionally good though...

Snow's is the best brisket and ribs I've had in years, get there early before they sell out...

Well any of yall that are from around Springtown or from around that area the best BBQ was James McVoids on the square in Springtown use to set-up next to the park as a matter afact the man that owned the lot there and gave it to the city put a clause in the deed that there would always be a spot for James but on the bright note I get to have have his BBQ because I am dating one of his daughters. It is probably the best i have ever had.

Wouldn't happen to be the Hard 8 would it? They've got some pretty good BBQ

I'm gonna have to go with TC Ponderosa's in Dickens, Tx. Stopped by on my way to Lubbock once, now I stop everytime. I love it.

Big Boys in Sweetwater is also very good. Stopped by after a tournament earlier this year, made my good day even better!

Yep. Coopers is joining the ranks of highly overrated bbq joints in Texas. Everyone really needs to make the effort to get some meat from Snow's in Lexington.

I've been hearing this balderdash about Coopers every year for the past 10 years at least. Yet every time I go the meat is just as tasty as ever...the sides are just as good. The free beans and bread and condiments are still plentiful, and the crowd is jolly and neighborly. Nope...ain't buying it. That's not to say you couldn't get a less than best meal there. I'm sure if you straggle in late when the good cuts are picked over and the meat is drying out....well ...you know.

But if you don't eat your meat...you can't have any pudding!

i hate Rudy's, and i hate the Salt Lick. I'll eat Luling City Market all day and night though. I sometimes have dreams of the stuff. It's not good BBQ if the place is famous for their sauce! Best way to make bad BBQ taste good is with sauce, good BBQ needs no sauce.

I do find this kinda surprising, I loved eating at Coopers, however the last time I was in Llano, the BBQ was a bit over peppered. But they do a bang up job for the lost part...I haven't tried the new ones.... The funny thing isthey have whole threads about how good lonestar beer is...

Tried the Fat Cow in Lewisville. I like my brisket sliced with a good smoke ring, but meat taste good. The chicken was out of this world though.

If any of ya'll ever get the chance and can catch them on a day that they're open, do yourself a favor and stop at K&J in the booming metropolis of Hamlin, Tx. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender and will leave you standing in the corner talking to yourself-no sauce required!

Not sure about the "best", but it is pretty dang good. We stop their when we are on our way to Port Aransas all the time.

I didn't see anybody mention North Main BBQ in Euless. I can eat some BBQ and it gets a few bonus points for being all you can eat for like $8. Also its BYOB. cheers

We also hit up Coopers in Mason when we go deer hunting. Again, not bad, but not amazing. The location in Mason doesnt seem to be very consistent. Brisket will be super fatty one trip then super lean another time.

I have an idea to settle this debate. Everyone bring me some sliced brisket from your favorite BBQ place and I will judge. I have a very sophisticated pallet. food

On the contrary Ox190... you absolutely cannot beat a Sonny Bryan's chopped BBQ beef sandwich and a cold beer for lunch at the "The Original" on Inwood in Dallas. The mere history and ambiance of the place is enough, but they also do make some mighty fine beef sandwiches!

North Main BBQ in Euless is now $15 a plate for all you can eat includes drink -no tip. Remember they are only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The BBQ is good. A little variable though. Sometimes it gets dry sitting in the hot pans waiting for customers. The sides are nothing special. I did say the BBQ is good.

Anyone ever had the BBQ at the original Uncle Billys Brew And Que, in Austin? In Barton Springs area, I believe?

Never been there but definitely want to try it. Of course, they also brew their own beer, which I have had some of, and it was great. Several of their beers just one some medals at the Great American Beer Fest up in Denver this past weekend.

Great beer. Wondering if their que matches up?

For those going to Coopers in Llano, do yourself a favor and go to Laird's BBQ instead. He's in a little house on Hwy 16 just before you get out of town. His BBQ, especially his brisket is much better than Coopers IMHO.

I would say that Spring Creek is not anywhere near the best. My neighbor gave me a gift card for my birthday, and I ate lunch there this week. Over $10 for a chopped beef sandwich, serving of coleslaw, and a drink. The beef tasted like it had been reheated, no flavor, and the BBQ sauce tasted like coffee. Once I use up the gift card, they won't see me in there again.

I'm sure it's not the best around, but has anyone tried Fat Cow BBQ in Lewisville? It's pretty new, and in a strip mall, but I'm always willing to give it a chance.

Haven't been there yet, was just curious if anyone had tried it.

I like Tyler's, Henks and Crazy Larrys in Amarillo.

Probably no thing such as the "best"; everyone has good days and bad days. And no one is going to agree on how they like their sauce anyway. Fun to read about new places or places I have tried.

I wanted to try the Mt Zion Church in Huntsville when I worked there but the times I went cold never find them open/cooking.

Best brisket I've ever had was at Black's in Lockhart. Best sausage was at City Market in Giddings. Like Trapperben, I can't seem to get to Mt. Zion in Huntsville when there are cooking. bang

Good BBQ is worth the effort. I just have to keep trying.

I just moved here to Lockhart on Friday.. I've only tried Black's so far, but it was really good.. Once I try all of the BBQ places here I will report back and let you know what I think.. Talking to the locals, most people like Kreutz..

After reading the entire thread.. Some people are saying Salt-Lick in Round Rock.. We stopped in there one day because we had seen it on the travel channel, we were very disappointed.. Meat was dry, and the sides weren't nothing to write home about.. I wondered how it got on TV, must have been some kind of pay-off..

I would put Sonny Bryans in about the middle of the pack as far as Texas barbeque joints go. Not bad, but not top level at all.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet, but Franklin's in East Austin is now officially the best BBQ I've had. You may have to wait in a long line to get it, but it's worth it. Sausage is a little different with a great flavor and the brisket is out of this world, flavorful and moist with a perfect mix of smokeyness and spices. They've only been around for a few years, but look for them to be near the top of all the "best" BBQ lists. Article in Bon Appetit Magazine called it the best in the country. Not bad for a guy that started out in a trailer just 3 years ago and hasn't even been in his B&M location for a year.

Also opened recently in Austin were a couple of other places with ties to Muellers in Taylor (Aaron Franklin of Franklin's worked at Muellers), Muellers in a trailer in South Austin and Stiles Switch on North Lamar. Both have a similar cut and style to Franklin's brisket, but neither are as great, but both are good.

Had McBee's down in Pleasanton on Friday and it was really good. Definitely recommended for anyone headed down towards Choke or a short side trip on your way to Falcon.

So my favorite is Franklin's with Kreuz's in second and bunch of others in third.

Most of the ones I've seen on the "road shows" and read about in the magazines have been disappointments. I think it's hard for restaurants to be consistent. Coopers in Llano has always been pretty good for me, overpriced though.
Worst I ever had was Davila's in Seguin or the BBQ joint in Blanco, but those were all years ago.
Dying to try Port City Barbecue in Jefferson next time I go up to Caddo Lake.

Silverado Smokehouse in Corpus Christi is outstanding. Ribs, Brisket, and sausage are all great, and the sides are very good, as well. I just wish it was closer to Ft. Worth. grin

Alas, Piggy's BBQ between Murchison and Brownsboro is no more, and they had, hands down, no argument, the best pork ribs AND sauce (which was not needed but was good all by itself) ever. Current best pork ribs in Texas are at Peete Mesquite in Marble Falls and guys, I know what I'm talking about.
I'm also disappointed that no one mentioned any variation of Elgin hot guts. Sadly, none of them are anywhere near as good as what the old Southside Market put out 40 years ago, and I have to admit that Myers is now my favorite.
Bottom line on BBQ is if it tastes better with sauce, it's not what it ought to be. Smoke is the secret. Lots of smoke.
But even so Elgin hot guts are best with a sauce made the way they used to make it, not the stuff they serve now. All it was was 3 parts cayenne pepper, 2 parts salt, enough 90-grain vinegar to make a thick slurry, and water enough to thin it so it would come out the grooves cut into the cork stopper on the whisky bottle picked up in the alley out back of Southside.
I know. I did it.

Have you ever tried Inman's barbecue in Marble Falls? I've passed it up about 100 times over the last 35 years and never tried it.

Inman's is OK in my opinion, but I like Peete Mesquite's pork ribs because of the way they cook them. The pit is a rotating array of racks with coals below. As the rack rotates, the ribs baste the ones below. The ribs aren't as smoky as I would like, but they are juicy and falling-off-the-bone tender. Plus they use the St. Louis style ribs, which have the gristly, fatty knuckle on one end, and I do love having to wipe that grease off my mouth and fingers.
If you are ever through Tyler, try Stanley's for ribs. They are darned good and probably a close second to Peete Mesquite's.

right now my favorite/one i think is the best is the BBQ available at the general store in Monaville, between Hempstead and Waller... great flavor, good price... The stuffed potatos are great there too.

only thing I didn't like, is that if you get the rib sandwhich the ribs are still on the bone, so you have to pull the meat off and put it back on the bun if you don't want to try to eat it with the bones.

worst I've ever had is Macs in rockport/corpus area, fattiest brisket i've ever had.

Just reading this makes me hungry. That knuckle is one of the best parts of the rib imho. Next time I'm through Marble Falls I may try Inmans and Peetes. As for Stanley's, I have the directions to there printed out and on the front passenger seat for next time I head through Tyler.

Loco Coyote is a great place but when you go take cash, they no longer take plastic of any kind. Also bring your appetite and your patience with you - the servings are huge, (REALLY huge) and you will have to wait for a table on Fri, Sat & Sunday.

Er, actually, St Louis style ribs have the "knuckle" piece removed creating a more rectangular shaped rib section. I normally leave that section on as well since it is such good eating. However, when I smoked up a few racks the other day, I went ahead and cut that whole end section off 1 rack before seasoning and smoking them. I also cut those into smaller portions about 3"-4" long then placed them on the smoker (I did apply just a small amount of salt and pepper). I smoked them till they were almost done but not quite. Pulled them off and set them on a plate to cool then vacuum sealead 2 to a package. Figure they will be a nice replacement for ham hocks in the next pot of pinto beans plus they have more meat than normal store bought smoked ham hocks do so once they cook in the pot, I will pull them out and debone them, putting the tender meat back in with the beans. Mmmmmmmm

Yeah that upper part that you cut off to make the St. Louis style, we always called that the "breaks". Never tried 'em in beans before. I usually leave them on unless room is tight on the smoker.
One of the barbecue joints in Terrell uses those "breaks" for ribs at their buffets.

Not too sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, so if someone has already I apologize. If you ever find yourself around Taylor,TX stop by Louie Mueller Barbecue. You will not be disappointed. Best BBQ I have ever had.

Check it out. The restaurant was featured in Guy's "Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives", pretty neat.

Yep. Quantity does not equal quality. I will put in a vote for Country Tavern in Kilgore. Not the best I ever had, but seems to me it has been really good for a long time. Ribs are pretty hard to beat.

Here in San Antonio, The Smokehouse, and Augies are the places to go, and not all Rudy's are created equally. The Rudy's off 151 near seaworld still makes some great bbq. Most other Rudy's throughout texas simply do not compare. IMO the best BBQ I have ever had in Texas was from Franklins in Austin. For those who complain about getting fatty brisket, just order it lean.

Don't know how good it is, but a new barbecue place has opened in Crowley. It's called M and Z's Smokehouse. It is located off Crowley Road in the shopping center where the Molly's Burgers used to be. If anyone tries it let us know how it is.

They do offer one unique item ~~ Beans and Cornbread. They say "It's not canned beans but rather like Momma used to make".

Extreme Bar-B-Que in Gun Barrel City went from excellent to off the list. I had ribs there last week and they sure rate as some of the worst I have ever eat period. I asked to speak to the new owner and he informed me it was the same ribs cooked by the same cook. He expected me to believe that.
