Getcha a Pelican!
They come in Puke, Fresh Patty, Dark, Forest,
Emerald, and Mucho Verde.

You'd have to give us your size to make a reasonable recommendation. But I wouldn't have anything Pelican makes and there are plenty of others who feel the same way.

I'm also looking for a kayak, and would love to see specifics why you hate Pelicans.

Basically, it's a "get what you pay for" thing. The plastic feels cheap, the front hatch is known to leak, and it's surprisingly tippy for its dimensions.

For duck hunting, you'll want something tan, sand, or dark green to help camouflage yourself. Also, you'll want something that has a high weigh capacity to be able to transfer decoys.

So how would the Pelicans be for paddling/fishing 200-300 yards along tree lines in creeks behind bridges? I understand they don't track particularly well.

I should clarify that my experience with Pelican is just with the Castaway model.

If you're fishing calm, protected waters you'll be alright. Open waters like lake and bays are when you begin to notice the subtle problems with the kayak.

I don't hate Pelicans but I wouldn't have one. Pelicans track poorly are not especially well made. They are not sold by any of the more reputable dealers. Seating is poor. There is nothing subtle about their problems. For a few bucks more you can have a lot better kayak.

I wouldn't get a pelican, because then the rest of us will have to shun you. I cant say anything from experience, but I can tell from looking at them in the stores that the construction is just not as good as most of the others. At least I think I can tell that... I'd suggest looking at some different kayaks, decide what you like, then keep a sharp eye on Craigslist.

I hate to see the Pelicans are junk, I've been looking at this http://www.academy.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_10051_168331_-1?N=581132415 Price is right, but if I could find a good used, I'd do it too. Is there a place that sells used? Other than Craigslist? I liked the Castaway, I'm not a real fisherman, just an occasional hobby for me. Is it that bad too?

That kayak is only 10'4".
It is a SINK not SOT.
The cockpit is 12" wide and 20" long. This kayak is for a little kid not an adult.

12x20 is the storage hatch area. I know it's a SINK, I would prefer SOT, they just seem cheaper (price) Is 10'4" too short? The only thing I know about kayaks is what I've read here. Might only take it out 10 times a year, at best, that's why I'm not wanting to invest a bunch.

Sorry, you are right about the hatch.
Save your money and get something better.
You need to get a good demo. That would probably end trying to do this overly cheaply. There is considerable difference between these cheap kayaks and something people find acceptable for fishing. Course if you really want to save some money just get a inner tube, or one of those inflatables from KMart-).

For the money a accend fs12t is a great yak. I have one and it's got good stability and there is quite a bit of storage.

Paddling.net is a good source of reviews on kayaks and canoes so you can find out what people who bought them think about them. People with complaints are usually specific in the reviews.

I found cycling to be another sport where the brand name of your bicycle "branded" you and could put you at odds with most of the crowd. Two truths govern life: There is a trade off between cost and quality; You usually get what you pay for but sometimes you don't.

I perosnally have a red future beach. I bought is @ dicks. I love my yak. I am 5'7" close to 200. I feel comfortable in it. let my friend borrow it and he went and bought one identical to it. I have been out on hubbard in white caps and did not feel uncomfortable. I like the size because it gets in and out of tight spots on creeeks easily. I can float in very shallow water etc. For the price I think it is a great starter. I would recommend purchasing a curved paddle rather than a straight one but for me personally I am very happy with the future beach yak.

I do not think the same way as A lot of guys. I think Like this. If you find a Pelican, that fits your size buy it.I have truble fishing with lot guys becouse they judge you off what you use.My yak cost me under $100 bucks. It is a sit on.I have used it many many times.Lot of nice fish have been abourd it :} With the 100s of cash I saved I used to buy my son one.If I would have spent 500 or so On a yak I would be floating it alone.I aslo would have made less trips [gass].
I think it is way better buy a cheep yack and a better rod reel.A very good rod will do way better on fish than any yak.In your case an extra box of shells or two.
Dont get me roung.I would love to have a nice yak.It is just a want need thing.I also think some of us cant save.I think some times it is better to buy cheep and use it than to save for ever and miss out on years of fun.

i doubt any of us would judge you by your kayak. most of us would advise somebody looking to get into the sport into one with a better resale value than a pelican because if they decide it is not for them they can get whatever they put into it right back out of it.
but as far as fishing goes I'd rather fish with somebody in a pelican that can fish than a tinhorn in a proangler.

not that i'm ever much inclined to fish with others...

There is nothing wrong with a sit in. I own a santa cruz raptor and love it. Super super stable and me and my gear stay warm and dry.
