Does anybody on here ever do any treasure hunting/metal detecting? I have always wanted to get into it, and recently bought a metal detector. I live in the DFW area, and am not really sure where too look around here. I am excited to take it to Galveston with me the next time I go. The beach is bound to be a decent place. At least it is easy to dig. I'd love to hear some tips or stories.

I have a Garrett metal detector. The best places to look are around the lakes after the weekend. You will be surprised what people drop. You will find a lot of nails, coins and trash metal. But eventually you will get lucky and find something of real value. I found a solid gold wedding band years ago around a lake. The most memorable item I ever found was a gold plated sheriff's badge.

As soon as i get my pirate ship back from the shop I'm going Island hopping to find treasure. I need a new crew though. I lost my last one trying to pillage the playboy mansion.

I`ve done it off and on the past few years. Lake Texoma is a good spot to look, but my favorite is old houses. I`ll look even if the house isn`t there anymore. I`ve found a few really old coins doing that. I have a Minelab X-Terra 70.

It is illegal to do in a state park. Schools where the little kids have recess(they drop money) and under bleachers turn up stuff.

Be sure to check local city and county ordinances. I know that the City of Austin makes it illegal to run metal detectors in all city parks.

My best find to date with my old Garrett.

It is a "Vinergarette". The ritzy folks in the old days put sweet smelling stuff in it and whiffed by their nose to help offset the barn yard odors when they ventured out into the yard. I have found some on Tiffanys for $5000+, not sure what this one is worth. If you look closely, it has 2 of the makers stamps inside. Pretty sure is all gold, found it next to a pine tree near Leesville, La. about 25 years ago.

If you go to lake Grapevine shores, all I have found is metal shrapnel looking stuff. Does anyone know if that area was a target/bombing range at one time??

Great hobby! the beach is gonna be your best bet for finding treasure. I would talk to older folks to find out where old builings use to be, schools, grocery stores, home places. I found a lot of silver coins where school cafeterias use to be...I guess kids would drop money after runing around during lunch. Another good place is under bleachers at old sport complexs.

I would love to comb some of the beaches here especially when the lake gets real low. Lots of stuff lost in the water that is waiting to be found when lake levels are low.

Check your regs carefully. I know at one time it was illegal to metal detect on some or most Texas beaches.
