I've been working on my duck boat / backwater fishing boat project today and need a little help. The transom wood is rotten and needed replacing so I tore it out this morning and this is how it started.....

Removed all the way......

Plywood thickness about 1 inch.......

From the back side.......

I am thinking about replacing the wood with 2 pieces of half inch treated plywood glue together. My biggest question is what fasteners should I use to replace these aluminum rivets, that won't leak or rust?

I'm not sure what type of fasteners to use (maybe a nut/bolt combination of some sort, or try and find replacement rivets?), but I would imagine a good marine sealant would be a good idea when you put the hardware in.

Stainless steel screws and use some sealant on the threads and around the entrance holes. I would clean around the holes on the aluminum side real good and maybe sand around them about a 1/2 or so with about 80 grit paper and either use Marine silicone or some of that GOOP stuff Hoppy raves about. When I did mine like yours, I used two pieces of plywood and painted with oil base paint, two coats. It peeled after a couple of years so I should have used some resin either epoxy or polyester. That's what I would do, use some polyester resin and paint the plywood all over, especially the edges with the resin and let it cure good before assembly.

Put the plug in.

I would use 2 thicknesses of 3/4" marine plywood or a piece of pressure treated 2x8. Stainless steel bolts with stainless washers and lock washers, sealed with a good marine water proof adhesive should do the job, better than factory. Prime then paint it all for protection from water and sun.

I wouldnt do the screws, nuts and bolts with washers works great for me. I also like the 2x8 or 2x10 instead of plywood, but either way will work.
