So since it has been so slow ive been doing some crappie fishing and limiting out everytime I go out hahaha. Fun fishing on an ultra light. Havent been to Dunlap in about 2 months so was wondering if anyone has a report? Thanks guys appreciate it

the day I was out there was the morning right after that full moon was out bright as could be all night. It was actually the slowest day I have ever had on Dunlap. I caught 7 or 8 but nothing with much size to em....2.5# being the largest. The bluegills and shell crackers were all over the pace hitting everything. I probably should have gone small and targeted them.

I fished the weekly Sunday morning jackpot out there this past Sunday and it was slow for everyone. Only 6 of us showed up, but 6lbs won with 3 fish. I think everyone had at least 1 keeper, and most of us had 2, but the winner had 3 keepers. No fish of any size and everyone said that they had caught a few dinks each.
Suprisingly, I had a much better day on Canyon by far the week before and planning on hitting up the Wednesday night tourney out there this evening.

Yes, every Sunday from 6:30am (or safe light) till noon. Peeps usually start showing up at 6-6:15am and start launching. Launch and weigh in is under the I-35 bridge. Entry is $15/man. It's an individual tourney but you can fish 2 from a boat.
Last yr there was on average 15 boats I'd bet (25 entry's with some being close to 20-25 boats and 30 entry's, at least all the ones I fished.
It's winner take all and I recall last year one pot reached close to $400.

Did somebody say bluegill and shellcrackers? Heading out tomorrow for some panfishing. Any particular patterns/areas for the panfishies?

I went last Sunday for a couple of hours. Launched at Schumans ( thanks guys ). Spent most of my time playing with my new LSS-1 ( its AMAZING ). Caught three dinks but had a GREAT time. Not much boat traffic on the lower end of the lake and that in itself was worth the trip. I caught all three on a parrot colored Rapala crankbait.

Hey Tamale, can you give a guy some help on where/how to fish Dunlap? I just throw my tacklebox at them and see what they hit! No rhyme or reason lol...

I started fishing Dunlap by "junk fishing". Then, I narrowed it down to buzzbaits, pitching a jig/craw, pitching a wacky weightless 5" Senko, and casting KVD 1.5 and 2.5 cranks. I've only caught ONE big fish, and the rest have been this size:

I caught my PB at Dunlap. She went 8lbs15ozs! Caught her on a PopR in about 3ft of water! Things have gone downhill since then! I keep trying though! Sounds like I'm throwing the same stuff as you Cloud Dancer! I might want to change to something they aren't used to seeing!

I dont know man. Last year it seemed you could go just about anywhere, throw the jig and catch a 7 pounder. This yr is a totally different story. We need current.

I am taking my family to lake dunlap, staying at a cottage for a long weekend. I am a first timer to the lake, and I am looking for some advice/recommendations...1)good places to set up juglines/throwlines 2) Any tips for kayak fishing? 3) How busy is the lake? Could my 7 yr old be ok in a kayak on his own and not have to fight traffic. Any and all help you be much appreciated!

Boat traffic can be pretty heavy and since its so narrow wake and waves get to you quick and hard for boats to avoid you even if they want to. I only kayak on it earrrrrly morning and at night. I dont think I would be comfortable with a young one out there.

A great place though for the kayak would be to get in at the 35 boat ramp and go upriver. If you want you can portage over the little dam and head as far upriver want without boat traffic. Comal of course will have tubers during the day.

+1 on Texag's thoughts. Put in at 35, go upstream (to the right if you're facing the water on the ramp) and fish up there. should be WAAAY safer

Lakes fish very different.. McQueeney has virtually no pressure right now since it is virtually impossibble to launch, so I can guarantee catching fish at McQueeney isnt very hard right now. It has always been a great summer fishing lake IMO. On the other hand, Since last years catch was so good at Dunlap, the fish have seen every bait in the box. The last 10 times I have been out there, I have not caught nothing to brag about. I know both lakes well, and I would much rather be fishing McQueeney than I would Dunlap. However if you do go out to Dunlap, fish from around 5am to 10pm. Anything after that, you are going to get waked off the lake.

Tourney's alternate between Canyon and Dunlap every Wednesday. They start at 5pm. Individual format $15 a man. If you can catch fish on McQueeney all you have to do is catch 2 keepers on Dunlap and you will win.

Someone put out the details on the Wednesday night tourneys - I would like to join.
Every other Wednesday - What cycle will you be on on July 20. I could probably make the 20th and 27th.
Please post. I have not fished Dunlop in about a year, but really enjoyed the lake and have no reason not to hit up some of the Wednesday nighters.

Wednesday night working mans Tourney Schedule Individual format but can fish 2 in a boat Entry fee - $15 (winner takes all) Shotgun start at 5pm. Weigh in at 8:45pm
July 13th - Dunlap (launch under I-35 bridge) July 20th - Canyon (launch Jacobs Creek Park north ramp) July 27th - Dunlap Aug. 3rd - Canyon Aug. 10th - Dunlap 7 days after that - Canyon
Canyon is fishing better than Dunlap right now by far. I didn't make the last 2 T's on Canyon, but have been out there and I'd say it would take close to 8-9lbs to win on 3 fish out there. Queue the potlickers! They'll never find the fish, it's taken me years.

Yeah, I agree with Tamale. Canyon is WAY better than Dunlop so far this summer. Some might forget, Dunlap is really just a river, with river fish in it. Without current, the lake is never the same and the fish don't feed the same//water looks like [censored]--and the fishing is [censored]. We get some rain and get the water moving--it will be game on for Dunlap.
Wish the Wedsday tournaments would be from 7-10, instead of starting at 5PM. Hard for anybody to get out there and fish it--unless you own your own company.
Been thinking of starting a Friday nighter like the one out at Medina. Similar format 7:30 till midnight---thoughts anyone???

Decided to try it this morning. It took over an hour for my 1st bite, but it was a decent one between 5-6 pounds. I soon gave up on my usual baits and went to the drop shot in some deeper water....picked up 4 more keepers. The skiers came out early and i left a little after 9am. What a difference a year makes. I was boating 25-40 this time last year.

Went out Sunday. Launched from Schuman's. Went upriver to some stickups on the left side and flipped a glimmer blue trickworm at them. Caught three nice little 2 - 3 pounders. Left by 1030...it was getting HOT already.

Is the lake still going to be fishable/boatable after being lowered? How long is this going to last? Why is this happening??

It is fishable/boatable when lowered. But you have to be careful at the launch under I-35 and there are a few low spots on the lake that it really helps to avoid if you have GPS and can stay n the channel. But, you probably wont see any tournaments on the lake because it just isn't quite as safe, especially when guys get in tournament mode and start moving around the lake real fast.

I heard that the lake is about 3' down. So, the ramps may not be useable and there are a few places that you will have to be VERY careful. I know that the 35 ramp can be used at 2' down carefully, but if it is 3' down, then it may be a little sketchy especially for big boats. I dont know anything about Schumanns.

I might go take a look at that ramp. I know it's shallow water around it.

I haven't been out there to look, but I am thinking about launching at Schumans Friday morning. However, my boat is a 21' Legend and the trailer has 20" tires which means I have to back a little further in the water to get the boat off the trailer since the trailer sits so high. Would that be a problem at Schumans?

Where is Schumans located? I just got my boat out of the shop and need to test run it.

Just so ya'll know, poked around the ramp at Shuman and it ends at the second post from the end of ramp on right side if you are facing the water.

The kids and I fished this morning with little success. I did see another boater drive his boat trailer off the ramp this morning. The boat was a 22" deep v ski boat. This was under IH 35.

I hit it last wed. launched out of SB. The water is mucky and nasty from that flat before the mill all the way to the damn. run upstream a bit for cleaner water and you will find fish. We had good numbers but most were 1-2#. a few to 4#. caught on cranks, tx-rigged worms, drop shotting and jigs. nothing on the surface.

I just got a little boat and was going to take it out on Dunlap this weekend. 1st time. I'm guessing the boat traffic has slowed down some on the weekends right ? Any tips/advice would be great if you feel like sharing. I've been fishing saltwater only for about the past 7 years so I'm out of practice big time.
