Ok, Ive been loading and unloading my yaks in the back of my truck for long enough. I just got a pretty good deal on a 18' boat trailer. I set the two yaks on the top of the trailer just to see how they will fit. with the sides of the kayaks touching they are flush with the outsides of the fender well. I've seen tons of pictures on TKF, But I was wondering anyone here has taken a old boat trailer and made a kayak trailer out of one?

Nice, Shaun.
Should be a fun project.
I would imagine that the modification wouldn't be too entirely complicated. In fact, it looks like you already have the right idea with those pieces of wood.
Just a few pieces of wood, a drill, some nuts and screws, and a few sets of tie-downs.

Yea, I'm going to try to keep it as simple as I can.
I understand the best way to keep a kayak is upside down. But will there be a problem long term, if I have the kayaks ride side up on the trailer?

I would try to figure out a way to have a piece of rubber coated steel running thru the scuppers that I could slap a padlock on the end of and have my yaks locked to the trailer.

Your kayaks will be OK riding right side up on the trailer. I did that with my truck rack back when I used saddles. Took the saddles off because I haul many different types of kayak hulls.

Use pool noodles for the padding. Make sure to have the yaks ride level with the road... wind resistance will hurt the long haul and gas mileage. That is a nice long tounge and should be a breeze to pull with anysize car or PU.
Good Luck

I didn't have much time to work on the trailer after work tonight. I did manage to take the two bunks off and throw a 3/4" piece of treated plywood down. The length of the trailer is going to be close to just about right I think.

You said the length is going to be close but it looks like it's plenty good. You might even be able to add a truck tool box in front for storing gear.

Looks good, I've been using my old "bass buster" trailer as the bb is no more.

Turtle Todd: i bought a truck box at a garage sale for just that purpose but haven't figured out how to put it on my trailer. If i go cross ways how are the yaks gonna fit? if i put it lengthwise I may not have room for 3 yaks. Have you added one? If so some pics would be welcome-p-

Seen it done on jet ski and other trailers. I was thinking it could be mounted crossways toward the front but with enough room for sharp turns. Probably would have to weld some kind of support to the trailer for it.
