If you want the pond to produce healthy fish, then leave the grass alone. If you want it muddy and want something to eat all the fish eggs out of it then introduce carp.

Introducing grass carp is the biggest mistake that can be made in managing a pond or lake. Hydrilla is a problem, but that cure is much worse.

Ask TPWD how they screwed up Conroe. add cypress springs to that list And Weatherford. Twenty five years later we are still suffering from the ill-advised introduction of White Amur. And do not believe they are sterile.

Ask TPWD how they screwed up Conroe. add cypress springs to that list I wish those things would die out already.. And the homeowners wonder why 'their' lake isn't clear anymore?

Ask TPWD how they screwed up Conroe. i believe the homeowners around the lake are to blame.....they had the money and power behind them. they forced the eradication of the vegetation.....

want to screw up your pond and have useless fish in it that no one wants? put some grass carp in there!
homeowners who want to eradicate grass and put in grass carp are complete and utter idiots. they get rid of the grass sure, but then the lake gets muddy and nasty and everyone wonders why? idiots....

It was not entirely the homeowners. TPWD had an "expert" who was writing a thesis for his PHD and he recommended the grass carp to get data for his paper.

true, but the homeowners were the power behind the the amounts to be put in. they didnt care about the lake itself, as it was built for a water shed, not a place for recreation, and the grass made their property look bad to the eye. they felt that if some were good, then tons were better. they treated the lake as if a little exlax is good, then a lot will be better. they didnt want to hear the % ratio of carp to acreage of grass in the water. they wanted it all gone and succeeded in doing so. we fought them in court, and got a few postponements, but the conroe association was/is a very powerful (lots of money) group.

I hate grass carp as much as the bass guys but spreading misinformation doesn't help anyone. Name one fish that won't eat another fish'es eggs? I bet sunfish and catfish eat more than any other species.

TPWD does not admit to putting grass carp (White Amur) in Joe Pool. I think you are seeing common carp. On some days you can almost walk on the backs of the carp at the marina. TPWD records show that 64 fingerling White Amur and 64 adults were put in Conroe in 2006. Conroe has 20,000 acres. Conroe had the reputation of having the best Bluegill fishing in the state. Just 128 fish destroyed the fishery. Think about poor little Lake Weatherford at 1100 acres. They put 1101 grass carp in the lake in 1990. Huge white amur are being caught still. There is not a blade of grass in the main lake. The water is stained. But the homeowner's association is happy because the docks are weed free.

Sorry. I will prove myself wrong by going in the morning and catching sand bass relentlessly at Pool while using the regular carp as a guide like always.
