There is good fishing withing 300 miles in all directions from El Paso. laugh

Most likely the "ponds" you are seeing are dry washes and dry basins used as retention ponds in the event that it does rain to control flash floods.

El Paso is in the Chihuahuan desert. There isn't any thing to fish in in the desert.

Caballo dam near Hatch, has good white bass on the Rio Grande, Elephant Butte lake has bass, crappie, catfish, near world class striper fishing, and maybe even trout. Up around Cloudcroft between Cloudcroft and Ruidoso, The Mescalero Nation has quite a number of mountain ponds that are well stocked with rainbow, and brown trout. Some of the streams around Ruidoso, have native rainbow and brook and brown trout in em.

Not in the city, but reasonable "West Texas sized" drives fairly easy to get to all of em, and the scenery to and from ranges from beautiful to spectacular!

Enjoy!

Go Getcha some!!

I lived in Las Cruces NM for a year while I went to school and the fishing is not good. There is Elaphant Butte and Caballo wich are by Truth or Concequences NM. I know the Butte is really low now but last time i was there for memorial day the fishing was good. I would still recomend heading east though to somewhere in TX where the fishing is better.
