Wow alot of bad info and misguided fishermen on this thread!! I am pretty sure of my information as regards Conroe and Weatherford and their experiences with the White Amur. I lived through it. What information did you consider bad? I agree that the gentleman with the comments about carp eating eggs and fry may have been misguided. Surely you do not argue that removing all the vegetation in a lake is good.

Grass carp work great. They got rid of all the grass at Joe Pool and now they eat all the other fishes eggs.Pretty soon carp will be all thats in Joe Pool. Below is a link to the latest Parks and Wildlife info on lakes and ponds where grass carp were stocked by permit. That does not mean that they are not in a particular body of water. If they are in a permitted body of water they are supposed to be released un-harmed. If caught elsewhere they are to be killed as and invasive species. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/water/environconcerns/nuisance_plants/public_tgc_permits.phtml

Every place where they have put the grass carp in to control the grass has ruined the fishery. The lakes have gone from clear water to muddy all the time. There is no easy answers, water draw down is the best way, however it would be hard for a small lake or pond.

the best way to control vegetation is through knowledge of all the tools available. mechanical tops the list...whether it be a large impoundment or small pond...there are ways to control it.....next would be the carp. the should be of the steril varity, and not just put in the lake haphazardly. there are many studies of carp vs acreage of grass. to many and we have conroe. tpwd are studying and have come up with studies for the amount of carp to grass acerage. i believe they are placing carp on the slim side of the studies....it is always easier to add one or two than try to remove them. i do not believe in chemicals....no way. the worst thing that happens is homeowners go to the hardware store, buy the chemicals then read the directions, and it may say one bottle per 5 acres. homeowner figures he is safe an puts his one bottle in 5 acres. lo and behold his neighbor gets his bottle out, reads the same instructions, and figures he is safe and places his bottle in 5 acres also........the domino effect takes place......and the lake suffers.....not to mention the eco. system of the lake. i am going to get off my box now...........

In the 1980's the Lake Weatherford homeowners were dumping 2-4-5-T in the water to control the weeds and then drinking the water. You may know 2-4-5-T by its nickname -- Agent Orange.
The city still uses 2-4-D to control the weeds. The pure chemical may be OK but commercial brands contain Dioxin -- a powerful cancer causing agent.

how about this fact. without vegetation in cypress springs, they will not stock any largemouth bass in it... there is no place for the fry or stocked fish to hide from predators.

similar to conroe. what is happening in conroe is bass clubs are growing native vegetation, and replanting into the lake. i have seen their setup and it is working well. maybe there are a few fishermen near cypress springs that are willing to do the same thing. just takes a bit of time and it is a win/win situation....and that is fact also.
