I've been using Quicksilver premium plus oil but heard now Mercury recommends Dfi in the pro xs engines. Is this correct and if so is it ok to mix the two? The Quicksilver DFI says on the bottle that it is not intended for use in outboards that require TC W3 oil which is what owners manual calls for.

Stay with the premium plus. My mercury man says that it is better. Also if you did change don't mix them the opti oil is a synthetic.

Premium Plus for ProXS, DFI for the Optimax. Not the same engines.

Don Weed, who is a Mercury Master Mechanic and moderator of the BBC Mercury forum, advises that Mercury now recommends Optimax/DFI oil for all ProXS models due to it having more additives to fight carbon build up than the Premium Plus. My dealer confirms this. It is also fine to mix the two while you're changing over. I have done the change over on my 250 ProXS.

AFTER you mix the two oils give your mechanic a call. the oils will gel in the tank if mixed together. It has caused 2 powerhead failures in my area already.

My mechanic says that if you idle a lot change over to the DFI oil, if not stay with Premium Plus... Dan

Premium plus has been used for years and Mercury has had the dfi oil on the market for a while. Mercury says the DFI is better, but all Pro XS and Opti's come from the factory with Premium Plus in the oil tank. As far as trolling, thats what trolling motors are for. If you troll alot with down riggers you should have a 4 stroke anyway.
