I've actually investigated this for a trip up there... Yes, they need to be registered...

I have this question....my dad lives in Oklahoma and I fish there a few days a year. My kayak doesn't need a title/tags in Texas and according to their site:
Vessels registered in other states using Oklahoma waters for 60 days or less
So how does it work for vessels legal in my state but not in Oklahoma? I wonder if my TX driver's license is enough to prove it's a Texas kayak?

I wonder if registering your kayak in Texas and getting numbers that stick on the side would help cut down the recent theft problem?? God knows we don't need more fees and taxes, but would it serve as cheap insurance?? Given the choice to steal an unregistered vs registered one I would think thieves would chose the easiest target. It's the same reason I run guard dogs with my sheep - convince the predators that an easier meal can be found down the road.

I dont think a thief would care if its registered or not, they can just peel the stickers off, they dont stick well to kayaks anyhow. Also, strictly stereotypically speaking, if they are thieves, they are dumb or wont care if it has numbers.

I'd paint them on. Even if a thief tries to cover it, maybe it would be enough to at least raise some suspicion or help identify the craft? JM $.02.

My email to the Oklahoma Tax Commission,
Oklahoma Tax Commission Customer Care,
Some friends and I were planning to do a kayak trip to your state and noted that kayaks must be registered. Texas does not require registration of these vessels and we were wondering if the passage Vessels registered in other states using Oklahoma waters for 60 days or less would apply in this case as well? Even though the fee would be minimal for these vessels, the inconvenience of having to spend time acquiring the registration document and decals then having to affix them to the kayaks would eat in to our plans significantly. We would like to know prior to booking accommodations so we can plan or change plans according dependant upon your requirements.
Thank you for your time,
Bert...(names changed to protect the semi, okay not so innocent)
Oklahoma Tax Commission Reply,
Hi our office has received your email. In the state of Oklahoma you have 60days of vacation time since Texas does not require kayaks to be titled you can get a letter from the Texas Department of Wildlife that states they do not title kayaks to have on the boat with you in case you get pulled over by a Lake Patrol Officer.
Motor Vehicle Department,
Jamie XXXXXX
Thus we are exempt from the tax but would have to take precaution to guarantee no fine is issued even though we have a valid Texas drivers license and a non-resident fishing license.
