Here in north central mid west we call them "dog fish". further north, in Minnesota, they have a similar fish but without scales, has skin like a catfish and they call that one an "eelpout".
Both species are a very aggressive preditor fish and can consume numerous game fish in a days time.
We usually cut open their bellies and turn them loose. Turtles have to eat also.

Its a female Bowfin, the males have a black spot on their tail. Bowfin are a Native Texas Species.
They are predatory to other game fish, but they themselves fall victim to LMB, Turtles, Gators, Gars, and everything else.

Nice Bowfin! A very cool, native Texas fish! Both species are a very aggressive preditor fish and can consume numerous game fish in a days time.
That also describes largemouth bass, hybrid and stripped bass, and all three varieties of big game catfish.

BTW, there is no Junior Bowfin record for Cedar Creek.
