The gunnel is the rolled edge at the top of the sides of the boat. They attach the litels there so they shine on the water but don't blind thiose in the boat. Also it's suppose to keep the bugs down low and out of the boat.

With just a couple if tiny holes and some tiewraps, you could secure them to the side. I think they would be outstanding for the kayak cause they don't weigh anything and use very little power. The pictures on e-bay look like they would be durable and flexible. Even if they just lasted a couple of season, it would be worth it.

yeah, I was think about perma wiring just because it would be pretty hard to get to a battery down in the hull to attach or detach the leads when you wanted it on or off. But now I am think to put a switch like I said but make the strip removable for days when I'm day fishing. But then again, they would be good for and serve the double purpose of making yourself visible at night when your cruising areas where boat traffic is a problem.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

They are 100% waterproof and very durable and flexible enough to fold back on themselves and slide down into a 1 inch diameter clear pvc pipe section. Attaching them to the kayak would be interesting as glues don't seem to work at all well on kayak hull plastic. I also think you lose something when you place the lights Above the water. REMEMBER all the light that is reflected back at you by the waters surface is light you lose in the water. I found one of the clear polycarbonate florescent light bulb protector sleeves yesterday at Home Depot. It is 4 feet long and will make two 24inch lights for $2.97. I will either epoxy or silicone seal two 1 inch pvc caps to the ends. I will drill holes in each cap to allow it to fill with water (not a problem since the strip is waterproof) thus using the weight of the strip, caps, and poly tube as the weight to make it sink. Since the tube will accomodate 3 lengths of lights I will buy an extra 48 cm long string to add intensity. Total cost for the whole light with 168 lights is under $20.00. Hard to do any better than that.

Only problem with that design that I see is if you are in high current it have almost no weight to keep it down and will sit at the very surface. I guess you could just add weight if it became a problem though. Let us know how it works out on the water

Wrap a decoy strap weights around each end of the tube.

Melt a couple of tire weights into a small 7/8ths inch diameter circle and glue them into the bottom PVC cap. Down she goes.

Good stuff FCO.

I've been keeping up with thius thread.

I bought two of the orignal 3' long green lights about 12 years ago and had one on each end of a balconey overlooking the Key Allegro channel.

Kept them submerged and on all day and night.

That did eventually lead to a leak since it was under pressure 24/7.

Had some piggie/pin perch traps that stayed full.

The trout reds and flounder didn't always show up, bait almost always did in the summer.

Remember one night three reds staring straight into it, ... totally mesmerized and wouldn't move or budge for anything.

First off, most of you know me by "Reel Lites"

Would like to thank "Impulse" and others that related to the price of being in business.

Am retired, build lights more for hobby than profit.
My lights are 100 LEDs have also 200 LEDs

There is 25 LEDs on one bulb x 4 bulbs equals 100 Leds.

Then I have to wire them in series with 15' wire and 30 amp clamps, tubing and rubber caps and mis.
Then Free shipping to Texas runs close to $6.00 shipping cost

If you do the math you will find that have about $26.00 cost
and retail $42.00

What you will find is that my light is condensed down to 8 1/2 inches and believe very strongly that it will perform better than one would expect it to.

Have to pay federal taxes, website fees, and paypal fees.

Do not object to people making their own lights, for those

Having done some research on LED's recently I have found out the the lower the power consumption the dimmer the LED's are. From the company I posted the ebay link to their 24 LED super duper high intensity bulb (3x brighter than their standard LED) uses 2.35 amps vs 120 LED's running at .9 amps. Therefore I can run 5X as many LED's for about 40% of the amperage consumed or about 12X as many LED's for equal amperage. That means I can run 288 LED's for the same amperage and I guarantee that 288 LED's put out more light than the original 24 super duper intensity bulbs AND I don't have to fuss with making the light waterproof.

I don't know much about the LED's that others use, but I do know that there is no free lunch when electricity is involved. If I choose to make a 12 inch light out of the 120 LED strip I just have to have s lightly larger diameter clear PVC tube to stuff the LED's into. It's too easy to build my own. Yes, I won't have all the bells and whistles and mine won't be as pretty but its the fish that have the final vote anyway.

I found this company
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&Page2Disp=%2Flight_bars-flexible.html

I was thinking about buying the 39 inch strip and adhering (wrapping around) it to a 1 inch white pvc pipe. Then inserting the pipe with the lights into a 2 inch clear vynal tube from home depot. Seal the ends with silicone and add a weight to it.

What do yall think?

I am curious if the LEDs are bright enough compared to traditional lights. If this will work I will make 4 of them and hang them off of each corner of the boat. White bass slam if you know what I mean.

wal1809 - the light string you are looking at is exactly the same (for all intents and purposes) as the one I specified out for you on Ebay except you will pay $20.00 for a 100 light string for what you can pay $9.99 (including shipping)for on Ebay for a 120 light string. Its your money, but if you want to spend $20 why not spend $18.98 for two 120 light strings from Ebay. You don't NEED to wind the string around another pvc tube - they are stiff enough to just let them hang in the tube, or better yet double the string up and put it in the tube and have the tube be only half as long.

I'll try to post a picture this evening.

Built the light yesterday and have discovered a better way to do the end caps to accomodate the electrical connections at the top and some weight at the bottom. Will get the other needed parts today and finish the light. So far I have about $24.50 invested in each light, but that includes an additional $8.99 for a second 72 light strip giving this 32 inch long light 192 high intensity LED's. If made with the original 120 LED's it has cost $15.50 so far. The pictures will be with the original 120 lights as the second strip has yet to come in.

I just ordered 4 of the green LED strips. Gonna run 2 down each side of the boat. That's 8 feet of lights down the side.

Will post up as soon as I have pictures.
