As a lot of you have figured out by now, I'm far from an accomplished slabber but I had a question regarding line for jigs.
With bass fishing, no stretch braid works really well for jig fishing since the sensitivity is outstanding and you get much stronger line per diameter. Why wouldn't the same be true for crappie?

Yup. I've had the love/hate side of braid for years now. I'm pretty well staying on the love side now. 8# for jiggin' & pitichin'. 20# for my system.

4 to 6 lb low vis for me as we have fairly clear water and i personaly prefer micro and ultralite equiptment for crappie The biggest problem that i have is line memory. I have been using 20 lb on my wiper and white bass poles the past several years but im going to lighten that up also as it is difficult to break off when i get hung up.

I've used braid, mono, flouro and blends. You know what? They all catch fish and they all have their place. Right now I am using Trilene 100% flouro I believe. Strong as heck, a little memory to it but it works great especially for fishing heavy brush like I have been. I use braid around trees a lot so the fish can't wrap me around limbs and stuff, it does help in the sensitivity department for sure.

Braid is great if you're fishing open water, bridge pilings, or areas where there is not a lot of brush. If you're catching crappie off smaller brush piles, getting snagged with braid can often pull or move the brush pile, spooking the fish. If I'm fishing for crappie that are tight to smaller brush, I prefer to use mono so I can break off and keep fishing the brush.

I just bought some 8# braid it's only 1# diameter gonna give it a try. I was hoping it would break off when hung up but I doubt it will.

Walley Marshall 8lb. I can reel up a small bus with this stuff. but snap it and it will break off leaving the piles alone so fish don't spook to bad.

I keep trying to fall in love with braid for crappie but just can't do it. I have tried all the brands that the guys around here recommend but none of it feels right.
For the last year I have been using P-Line CX in both the Hi-vis green & the florescent blue. I like both but the blue is my favorite. Very low memory even in cold temps., small diameter, better than average strength. All a round the best line I have ever used.

POWER PRO HI-VIS YELLOW +1 The only things I don't like about pro-power is it looses the color and gets limp, like thread. I have been using 10# but think I will go up to 12# or 15#.

The only things I don't like about pro-power is it looses the color and gets limp, like thread. Try 10# Fireline in whichever color strikes your fancy. I use the flame green w/ fluoro leader it fades almost white but doesn't ever get that limp.

Dang...all I use is 4# Trilene XL. I lose maybe 2 jigs everytime I go out to snags, but never lose a fish. 10# line is overkill, IMHO.

In deep water braid has no stretch and make's for good hook set's,you can add a mono or floro leader if needed. As far as mono I have caught a lot of crappie on Trilene XL.

My answer to your question is yes. I'm not an expert by any means so this is just my opinion. I had been using P-Line CX 8# for everything while crappie fishin, and still have it a my dock shootin rod. I recently switched to 10# (4#dia) Fireline Flame Green. The CX can't match it for sensitivity, you can feel the jig when it touches most anything. The thing I noticed that really convinced me though was when you get that "soft" bite, where the crappie just comes up under the jig and mouths it, with the CX you really had to be focused to see the slack. With the Fireline I notice a a small stiff arch in the line at the surface when the jig rises just slightly. Like I said earlier, I'm no expert, but in the very short time I've used it I know I've caught fish on a "soft" bite that probably would have went unnoticed on the CX. Just my two cents worth.

I got around that lack of feel issue when I switched to Dobyns Rods.
