Just got back from Falcon, was fishing the Championship for the "South TX Five!" It was a 2 day sat/sun event, plus I pre-fished on Friday!

Big Fish are very hard to find right now. The big bass for the Tourny was only about 7.5 lbs, and the heaviest sack each day was only about 29 lbs, caught by Tim Griffin. If you dont know him, Mr. Griffin is down right impossible to beat on this lake. He considers 30 lbs, a bad day!

I took 4th place, had about 21 lbs the first day, and about 17 lbs on the second day. My lowest weight totals all yr at Falcon!

The water was very off colored and the winds were about 15-20 mph in the afternoons. The sky was blue bird all weekend as well!

The fish are neither shallow nor deep. EverythingI caught was in the 10-15 ft range, as was the case for most other people. Fish seemed to be suspended in flooded brush.

The fishing was very decent mumbers wise, as I caught about 20 or so fish each day. However, they were all in the 2-5 lb range, and they refused to chase any kind of cranking type lures. I only managed two fish all weekend on a crankbait!

The way to go seems to be big heavy TX rigged worms. I would suggest going with a 3/8 oz weight. This seemed to draw reaction strikes from the suspended fish. I caught most of my fish off of points that had heavy flooded brush. I would sit in about 20 ft of water and cast into 10-15 feet. A few road beds also seemed to hold fish. I heard a rumor that the tourny was won off of areas where roadbeds meet ditches, but Im not certain on that.

Aside from the large tx rigged worms, 1/2 oz spinnerbaits in blue gill color also caught a few fish. However, the fish didnt seem to want to chase anything moving too fast. Very strange for this time of year.

Anyways, you can catch a lot of fish, but the size isnt there right now. I was told by several locals that even the guides do not know where to find consistently big fish.

I fished last Thursday and it was tough. I found the fish in 20 - 30 ft range suspended in deep brush on points or suspended in brush in creek channels. Did not get a single bite in the visible flooded brush and also no bites on a crankbait. I thought running that crankbait at 15 - 20 ft over the top of the brush would wack em, but not the case. They wanted slow moving soft plastics. As a side note, I fished the Mexico side as well and felt completely safe. I did not go way back in some creek channel over there, but I have never done that. Hopefully all this bad press will end soon and they find the guy so the family can get some closure.

As you see, you basically saw the same things that I did, except the fish were just a tad bit shallower this weekend. We did not catch anything past 20 feet, but they were still in the flood brush and on big plastics. It has been a long time since I have been to falcon and not been able to catch cranking fish!
