I do my three way rig opposite yours, I put the hook on the long leader and the weight on the short. I do that when fishing for channel cats at Bridgeport.

Exactly, it keeps it off the bottom and sticks it up in their face. Cats aren't always hugging bottom so these rigs make it easy to adjust to diff depths that they are holding at

Thanks that's what I figured... my buddy has been using that Santee rig.. haven't seen much differance in our hook ups but we have been on dink fest the last few trips !... I guess the cork doesn't bother them.. just seems a little bulky to me but i'll give it a shot...

I'd like to know how to tie that knot you do on the hook. Thanks for posting the S.C. rig looks perfect for drifting. Just got my first kayak and now have to decide where to go. Going to travel light- Casting net, Bait bucket, Very small tackle box, Abu Garcia on a lightening rod with 15 pound Andie, Ice Chest for the keepers, gallon of Arizona green tea with ginseng and honey, trail mix, PFD, Paddle, Phone. Think I'll try Grapevine where Denton Creek come in,they might be packed in there like sardines after all this rain.

Bored and thought I would post the difference of the two: Santee Cooper 3-Way Rig Heres the one I like ,looks like a combination of your two. Everything falls to the bottom for casting then in the water the float lifts the bait up to your determined height.

Chase or anyone else,
What size floats do yall use on the Santee Driftin?
Also, does anyone use a float on their hook-line section of the 3 way rig?

I know it's fun to watch, but it's also absolutely the wrong way to tie a snell. If you tie the way she shows, I promise you, you're going to lose a lot of fish and a lot of hooks. The correct (and IMHO easiest) way to tie a snell is shown in this video: Snelling a hook the easy way

I don't like to use a 3 - way swivel, somehow they always manage to mess up your line, like Albertking I use a heavy regular swivel and tie my leader to one hole and my main line and my weight line to the other end of the swivel, I put a 3" slip-float on my weight line before tying on the weight, when you throw it the float falls down to the weight andf when it hits the water it rises to the swivel to keep your bait off the bottom, I like to have about a 12 - 15" leader on my hook with 50# mono, and a 2 1/2 - 3 1/2' weight line, and my weight line is 20# and less, and my main line is 30# Here is a link to tying a snell knot the right and easy way!!! http://www.fishingkites.co.nz/fishingknots/fishing_knot_videos_and_movies/fish_hook_snell_knots.mov

Happy belated B-day!
On the Santee rig, s that a 'carolina keeper' you're using for a sinker stop?
The S-C, Tiny's float rig, etc. have worked great for me.
Been using the latter because current in river has been ripping. Only prob is when debris causes the leader to wrap on main line. Going to try the dropper loop version this a.m.

When y'all talk about leaders does this mean you are specifically using leader material like on the 25/50 yd leader spools or merely using fishing line as a leader?
What size do you use?

Thanks. I'm using surgical tubing for my sinker stop. When y'all talk about leaders does this mean you are specifically using leader material like on the 25/50 yd leader spools or merely using fishing line as a leader?
What size do you use? I'm using Ande 50lb Flurocarbon for my leaders. On the 3-way I use regular fishing line for the sinker.

I spend a lot of my time getting hung up on the bottom. I just found out about this S.C. rig and I'm going to try it the next time I go out.
One question I have is: Is the float fixed to the line or free? Does it make a difference either way?
Thanks

on the SC the float is pegged 2 or 3 inches from the hook. it is sliding on the 3 way

The only thing I don't like about the SC rig is that if I don't keep my lines tight (it's hard to in a lil boat that moves around alot) Then the hook can get way up off the bottom I might start using a "Tom 3way rig" on more of my rods....

If you're worried about that stick run your line thru a bead twice a foot or so from the end of your main line before you put the weight on.

Do you have problems with those weights hanging up when drifting? I use slinky weights and have almost no hang ups, but when I used the no roll disk weights, I hung up a lot.

I do my three way rig opposite yours, I put the hook on the long leader and the weight on the short. I do that when fishing for channel cats at Bridgeport. I forgot catfishN8 got hacked. This is what they changed his name to.

Just like to add that after losing some 5oz banker weights, I've found that putting a snapswivel on the the weight (instead of tying the mono directly to the weight) might help some of you bankers not lose so many weights.....the weights seem to eat at the mono, but with the swivel there's no problem at all...... JUST THOUGHT I"D SHARE, for awhile I thought the weights were falling off due to the force of the throw, but it turned out the rough edge on the banker weights was slowly rubbing away the mono. Swivel on weight was the answer!

Ive got one more question for yall, about the use of floats on carolina rigs. Is that beneficial for bank fishing also, or just drifting? I see how it would be effective. Are yall using the litte slide floats or are they the kind that attach directly to the line. I have some little sliders, but I wondered if them sliding right up to the hook would affect anything.

Use peg floats to lock them about 3 inches from the hook to keep the bait out of the mud

With the Sante cooper rig, if your line gets slack in it and you are still fishing your float will try rise towards the top of the water, so depending on how deep you are fishing, your bait may not be where you think it is, if you are drifting or can keep the slack out of it you should be ok!!!

I was given a fishing guide in South Padre, for a charity event, that used a three-way rig made out of one piece of mono. He'd tie a loop in the center and one on each end. His main-line would have a swivel on the end. He put a loop on the end through the swivel and then pulled the three-way though the loop which secured it so that it was doubled back on the swivel. Then did the same with a kahle hook in the middle loop and again with a bank sinker on the bottom loop. He had dozens of these tied up and when we switched spots he would slip the hooks and the weights off real fast and when we got to the new spot he would slip them back on. He told us that it worked great in grass and sand but in places where the weight could get stuck he would swap to an actual three-way swivel and use a lighter line from swivel to weight than swivel to hook. This way the weight could break off if it got stuck. Like this but longer. He'd make the distance from the weight to the hook loop long enough to get above the grass.

Just take the peg out so it will slide to the top when in the water

what would be any disadvatage to using a peg float on the 3 way rig? i pre-made some that way and dont want to have to break them down!!, but if theres a disadvantage i will have to!? Mark, did you put the bobber on weight leader or the hook leader? I put peg bobbers (pegged 2-3 inches from hook) on my hook leader on a 3 way. If on the weight leader u want it to slide up and down.......

i pegged them on the hook leader 2-3" from the hook thats how i does it but then again I AM DCM......... seriously it can't hurt nuttin...i think it's better than no bobber....cuz on a regular 3 way ur bait could still be laying in mud without a bobber......

DCM the expert who cant catch a fish!!! ???????? not sure what thats about?.............. there's several ways u can rig up a 3way rig....it's veratile....no bobber, pegged bobber on hook leader, sliding bobber on weight leader, longer hook leader , longer weight leader, sacrifice 3 way - using lighter test mono on weight leader than the hook leader, ...........
