im looking for some advice on fishing the surround areas of the corpus NAS. Im taking my father in law, wife and kids fishing. Never fished these areas before. i have a boat with a 10 in draft no jack plate. Im launching out of the Naval Air Station just south of demit island. We will be staying there from oct 8--11. I do have a hot spots map just point me in the right direction. Not very clear on the depths. please any help would be great.

I have fished the pier on base there and have SLAYED the specs there. Ive caught plenty of black drum, gafftops, and sandys off that pier. That's the only place on the NAS that I have fished. I normally go to Port A for the day and fish the surf or Horace Caldwell pier if I'm not out on the boat.

The NAS Corpus boat launch virtually launches you right into the area known as the Boat Hole. In addition to the Boat Hole, the area encompassed by the Crash Channels crisscrosses the area between the LBJ Causeway and the Naval Station. Shallow areas laced with channels almost always equals fish. The structure of the causeway pilings hold fish as does the intercoastal channel and Humble channel. All of this is within 3-4 miles of the Nas Boat Launch. You can't adequately fish this area in your 4 days, especially if you also spend a day on Bob Hall Pier, Packery Jetties, and/or the Padre Island Natl Seashore (PINS) surf casting. They sell live shrimp at the bait house just beside NAS Boat Launch.

In the worst way, I have been hoping for some time to spend fishing at night in the Crash Channel area using my submersible Green Lights. You never know what will come to the lights and it would be fun.

Called NAS Corpus Rec services to rent one of their camping trailers. As luck would have it they are all down for rehab since the last storm - apparently they got some water damage and need to have the mattresses, etc replaced.

Depth anywhere in the Laguna Madre is a subjective thing - depending largely on the draft of your boat. If you look at one of the fishing maps of the area that you can get (Hot Maps) and find the crash channels you would be ok as they are 7-8 feet deep. Other areas, use your trolling motor when the water gets skinny. One of the maps is pretty much the key, especially if you are new to the area. I have fished the area and I take it very easy. The guys you see up on plane in 12 inches of water either are Crazy or really know the area. As for me, if I get somewhere 30 minutes later with my motor and hull intact its fine by me. At 61, life is too short for Macho.

i agree with the Macho comment. when i was shopping for my boat speed was never a priority. i do most of my fishing anchored or drifting just going with the flow. in a hurry to go no where. Now the question which youll cant answer is. will the hurricanes be done by then. fingers crossed.

hey all !
I have not fished the surf at the NAS for over 30 years. Fished with an old retired Navy man. I'm now an old retired soldier. Believe it was late Feb and we would take a trout dart and a live shrimp, cast the 3rd gut, and caught the biggest white/sand trout I have ever seen. Want to do it again this Feb. Will stay at the NAS lodge and give it a go - what say you locals for advice???

capt grumpy, they have a program where you can apply for base access, they will give you an ID that is good for a year, that gives you access to all of the MWR stuff on base. just google it and you can find the application info.

I lived on base for several years there and killed a bunch of fish wading a flat right off dimmit
