Sorry I mentioned why I use light line. Didn't mean to open up a disertation on the "right way" to catch them. Bottom-line, the snelled hooks at Walmart have too thick of a leader and fish will shy from them. Try a lighter line. If you do injure one, it's a shame, but it's a fish not a person. If it's hurt too badly, take it home and eat it, give it to someone else that will, or use it for bait.
I know I'll catch flack for saying it, but even if a big fish gets killed it's not the end of the fishery. Carp are called common for a reason. They are plentiful, hardy, and survive in all kinds of conditions. Those big fish grew without being regulated, with bow fishing pressure, and with many anglers tossing them on the bank. I don't advocate being reckless with the fish, but my pomposity level has been reached.

Agreed to some extent Johnny. Losing one fish is not the end of the world. But what if that one fish was a 50? And if you could have saved it by just a bit of planning. Back to the original topic... I think on town lake you want to downsize some from any "snelled" hooks. Get smaller wipe gape hooks and I bet you see a change. Also the cooler weather is going to help your chances. Though all the fish being washed to mexico is probably not going to help.

academy sells a hook thats worked for me very well, its called the "big gun" live bait hook by mustad, size 4. its very big for carping standars, but its the right shape. i think cabalas has some smaller hooks by owner.
braid hooklink + hair-rig + flavored sweet corn = fish haulin texas-z!
