Twin Angler Registered: 08/04/10 Posts: 260	I fish surfside jetty often. I plan on buying all the equipment need to night fish surfside jetty. I need a way to catch bait fish. I've never used a cast net before and I dont know if I have the skills to throw one to catch bait. Is it easier to use a dip net? Which one is more productive in catching bait fish?

IgotSNAGGED Extreme Angler Registered: 06/29/09 Posts: 2542 Loc: The Colony, TX	If you want to catch bait with a dipnet, then there better be schools of a 100,000 mullets right off the bank for you to catch 1 or 2 at a time. It's not easy. I'd go with a castnet and learn to use one. Just practice in your yard a few times. It doesn't take long to get the hang of it. A smaller net is cheaper for one thing and you can throw it farther if bait is further out from the rocks. You can catch all the bait you need with that size. Go on youtube. Everybody and their dog has put up their way of casting a cast net. The simpler methods mainly rely on centrifugal force to twirl the net and will work better with a smaller size net.

Twin Angler Registered: 08/04/10 Posts: 260	How do you keep the live shrimp alive? I bought 2 quarts of live shrimp. I had them in a 5gallon bucket and used the square pump from the Cool Bubble kit. Half of my shrimp were dead.

Watched several different methods on Youtube and practiced in the yard and caught my first shad this past weekend. it was very fulfilling to catch your own bait. Thats how I throw it and its good. I have never tried to catch bait around jetty since theres a chance my net would get rip from the rocks and shells. I usually catch my bait at 332 and County rd/Level rd. You usally see cars on both side.
