Wal Mart sells more than one size and more than one design. I bought one with near solid sides and 1" holes in it. I use it in my pick up bed to organize just like a crate in the yak.
I picked up some "flats" for soft drinks that are built like milk crates but a little longer and only 6" tall. The manager at a local 7-11 gave them to me.

Ask for the store manager at Kroger or Albertsons or any grocery store. Politely ask if you could purchase just one crate for your kayak. Sometimes they will tell you that those are returned to the vendor. But most of the time they will give you one on the spot.
Works best if you're pushing a basket with some groceries in it. Works even better if your wife is doing the asking. Just don't get greedy.
