I think we had a successful trip apart from the wind and boat wakes. I know everyone got a bazillion super skinny 14-15inch stripers like these

And I even hung into a few nice spotted bass

And even a feisty little greenie

BUT not one of these fish took away from the main event:
SMALLMOUTH!
I got my first 2 smallies on the fly today!

the 2nd one was a little smaller

and I think I got the biggest striper right when I left at 10:50

carpy pic- I was trying to get her back in the water. The Bass Hunter's measuring board is 18" long an this fish was hanging over it at least 10 or 11 inches! 7lbs on the boga. SUPER SKINNY!

Today was a good day for me. The lake, even with the lack of shad, is still producing like crazy! Get out there and catch some! the stripers were all over the surface today starting at around 7 or 8 and continuing on some time after I left.

FISH COUNT (for me anyway- I have no clue how everyone else did)
Stripers-20
Smallmouth Bass-2
Spotted Bass-2
Green Sunfish-1

LETS SEE SOME MORE PICS FROM THE TRIP!

PB, you got the fly fishing gusto. Always good fish and pics. Keep it up dude, and get it all in while you're young (or maybe it's just before you get married whip).

It was great fishing with you guys! My trip was about the same as Austin's. I just didn't catch as many fish smile I had 2.5(one got off at the boat) smallies, a bunch of skinny stripers, and a sandbass. I hooked on to something pretty big, but it broke my leader and swam off with my fly... the one that got away smile

I didn't get too many pictures of the crew. I got one of Austin with a fish, but that was it. Grey and some of his friends showed up, but I didn't get any shots of them, or a chance to talk much.

The striper were biting all morning. They were schooling pretty nice as I was heading back in. I even caught and kept two on the way in.

A great day! Well, the wind was pretty rough. I didn't get too many shots, because I was fighting the waves and trying to keep everything in the boat!

Next time we need to go farther than that last cove where the three of us (Steve, Bryan, And I) stayed in for like 30 minutes. I motored down to the next cove farther down for about 20 minutes and the water up in the creek channel was glass smooth and I saw several smallies and 1 big drum. I caught a few stripers and would have stayed in there longer but I had to leave. I drained 1 battery (the TM and fishfinder shut off 10 feet off of the FINA sign coming into the marina) and used 1/4 of the other. I was marking water temps way below the other end of the lake's temps. over there it is 88-90 and over at the dam I was marking 82 by the ramp and 86 was the highest it got. It was nice meeting/fishing with you guys today! Just like the pickerel trip but with fish, dry weather, and sun! The wind really picked up from 9-9:30 then settled back down and I got slammed against a few rocks and the transducer for the fishfinder got banged up a little bit but other than that a great day!

It looks like y'all had quite a day. Skinny stripers look like a lot of fun. Would you mind moving that lake closer to my house, please? Having it so near Okieland is pretty inconvenient for me. smile

Nice fish everyone.

I just don't get the whole fish count s**t. Who cares if you catch 1 or 100? If you are going for numbers, you should switch to conventional gear, imo.

really if your going for numbers the best solution is gonna be high explosives followed by electroshocking, Rotenone probably disperses too quickly to be much good on large reservoirs but its best on ponds.

I guess I don't understand why someone would be concerned if a couple of teenagers count their fish. I counted my fish when I was their age and I suspect most of us on this board did too. I don't see why today's teenagers would be any different than we were. smile

Looks like it was a fun trip.

I had a lot of fun even though I had to kick my way back a little earlier than some of the crew. Caught a few small smallmouth, including 1 fish that absolutely believed he was at least 3 pounds (for the record, he was probably all of a half pound), a couple of meaty bluegills, and maybe 7 or 8 stripers, one of which went about 18 inches and maybe, maybe, maybe weighed a full three-quarters of a pound. If these fish were any skinnier you could probably see right through them.

It's always a great day out there and it was pretty cool to see the TFF Freshwater Fly Flotilla out in full force. That whole cliff section of Eisenhower park is just great fun on the fly.

Some pics:

If this fish ever grows up, it's going to be a brawler:

Hey, Austin ought to put a little 2 HP gas motor on that buggy and offer a tube tow service. Slow but beats the you-know-what out of kicking all the way there and back!

Call me crazy but I enjoyed the gentle exercise of kicking my way back against a 12kt wind and 1-2 ft "seas."

There were one or two folks who look like they might've appreciated a tow. smile

Personally - I am partial to cliff climbing right down to the where the action is and intended an Eisie return with that activity included in the plan. Thats what float boats are for !

I especially like the Lava over near Area E as it makes for more climbing excitement and boy does that water then seem cooler.

Brian and Steve,
Good to see you. Sorry we did not get to chat longer. I was busy entertaining one of my wife's German cousins. He is 13. Caught himself a couple of nice stripers. But I had to watch him close as the lake was more than a little choppy, yesterday. Anyway, hopefully I will fish you boys again, soon.

I can answer that for ya Officer Jerry.

See, some guys never learnt their counting past the two hands/ten fingers system, so with anything more than 10, situations get all diffucult for them.

Even a fellow's asking "Hey - What is 5 + 6 ?" can lead to an a** whooping

You probably meet and deal with lots of them, when you are on the job.

And still, some of 'em like to fish, some like to fix cars, some at a teach high school.

Sorry I missed all the fun this Sunday. It seems the wife thinks God and church is more important than fishing. I think Jesus was a fisherman.

SOME of us had to work...;-( and the "hole in the water, in which I throw $$" was parked in the Cabela's boat lot waiting parts. I'd a been happy to tow the crowd around, if I'd been there. I certainly looked like a great time was had by all.

As for fish counting, I got a real fish counter to keep Russel honest....

https://gf.state.wy.us/ae/p-1027-fish-counter.aspx

Austin, you need to come back to the Shop for more stuff... ;-) It would be great to see you again.

Is that thing automatic (as in it counts the fish for him as he catches them)?
If he's the one hitting the button you wasted your money!!! hammer
